I agree with all other reviewers - which was either 1 star or 5, so I had to average it out.

My understanding of the definition of typography is the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs - on paper or an lcd.

IMHO, the Typography in this book is for graphic designers and art directors. If you are looking for inspiration for graphic design this is your book and I agree with J. Rodriguez.

If you are looking for inspiration for your website or printer material this is not the book for you and agree with T. Snodgrass - don't buy this book. I too was disappointed by the contents of the book but can't give it 1 star because it is a well executed book with it's pics and descriptions.

Pictures are excellent and descriptions brief & to the point.

not what i expected.

i was disappointed in Type Addicted. It reminded me of another one of those grad-school senior project showcase picture books. I was expecting for at least SOME verbage on type, and font and the whole revolution in the shift and the need for it in today's broad-ranging design industries. I was hoping for some inspirational, fresh, new ideas and concepts with a few peeks at how they were applied.
I was really bummed, almost returned it. Still would return it. Wish i would have known prior to purchasing more about this book's contents.

About the Author
Al Tompkins is a teacher and a journalist.

He has taught journalists in 48 states, Canada, Egypt, Denmark, South Africa, The Caymans and Iceland. For nine and a half years more than 20,000 journalists a day read his story idea column Al's Morning Meeting on Poynter.org.

During his 24 years as a local television journalist, Tompkins was awarded many of the craft's top honors including the National Emmy, the Peabody and the RFK award.

A must-have for those in the biz

Even after going through J-school, this book had more to offer than my classes did. In J-school, they teach you the mechanics which is fine, but this book teaches you the art. Its an art that is being lost by the old quantity vs quality argument. Its possible to have both, but you have to know going into your story what you need to look for so that you can move on with ease. After 17 years in the biz, I really learned a great deal from the author, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone in my field.

Time Tested Life Advise and Some Stuff About Journalism Too

I'm not a journalist, but I loved this book. Of course, the focus was one journalism and media as a career. But his book was still a great help for my own purposes. There were tons of takeaways for a marketing professional as well.The authors voice is incredible, too. It makes it really easy to read the book. Tons of great lessons, specific to journalism and media, and also to life in general, in this book. I recommend!

Gorgeous book with excellent information

I should begin by stating I am not an artist. I've very recently been experimenting with abstract art and art journaling using watercolors, but I saw a review of this book and was intrigued to learn more about the use of alcohol inks. My book arrived yesterday, and I was impressed from the moment I started reading through it. The author/artist does an exceptional job of explaining this art form and I particularly like her attitude regarding process over product when approaching art. I was so impressed with this book, I actually ordered a second copy for my sister who happens to be an artist with a Masters Degree in Art Education. I'm eager to hear her reaction to this book, but I'm guessing it will be similar to mine. I am hoping to transform an area of my garage into a small studio area for my blossoming interest in watercolor (and now alcohol inks) as art mediums. The book is full of examples presented by a variety of artists working with alcohol inks and the photos are both inspiring and beautiful. Instructions for exploring alcohol inks are clearly explained and the author's enthusiasm is contagious. I would highly recommend this volume for both the established artist AND the person new to painting or expressing themselves via art.

Vibrant and inspirational - a "don't miss" for art enthusiasts!

I took a workshop focused on alcohol inks with Cathy 2 years ago, and she told us she was working on this book at the time so I kept looking for it and then pre-ordered it. Well worth the wait! The workshop was fantastic, and this book does a great job of summarizing what can be done with this great art medium. And it does what few art books do - it could stand alone completely as an accessible and well explained "how-to" guide OR as a beautiful compilation of gorgeous pieces of artwork that you'll just want to pick up and look at over and over! This is a favorite now of all my art books!

The Outlaws are back on the Edge!

The Assassin's Curse is a satisfying novella to read while waiting for the release of the fourth Emperor's Edge novel. The third novel, Deadly Games, ratcheted up my excitement over the characters and their changing relationships.

This isn't YA fiction, and I recently stumbled upon Lindsay Buroker and fell in love with The Emperor's Edge. So far there are three novels and a couple of short stories that focus on specific characters. The Assassin's Curse focuses on Amaranthe, the leader of the Emperor's Edge, and Sicarius, the deadly assassin looking for exoneration. I won't say much about their role in the series but their latest adventure establishes them as the main attraction of the Emperor's Edge.

I still say those two have chemistry even though it's hard to see. I love how in any situation Amaranthe and her team gets into they always learn something new about each other. Each mission solidifies their resolve and loyalty to one another.

I'm definitely ready to get on with the series and read the fourth novel!

Amaranthe and Sicarius strike again!

Aaaah, there is nothing better than getting a Lindsay Buroker short to appease one's appetite while waiting for the next EE novel to come out . . . And this one doesn't disappoint! In Assassin's Curse, while Amaranthe and Sicarius are out training, evidence of trouble suddenly arises. And Amaranthe, being a magnet for trouble (and eager to cut training with Sicarius a bit short, of course), eagerly insists they check it out.

What follows is a haunting mini-adventure involving an ancient curse, some dangerous machinery and a late night swim. If you are a fan of Lindsay's other books, you will definitely appreciate this newest addition - and we even get a tidbit of information on Sicarius' past . . . ;)

Thanks again Lindsay and I cannot wait for the next book!

A Satisfying Short

I am a HUGE fan of Lindsay's books, and this short story does not disappoint. If you haven't read The Emperor's Edge yet, this short won't mean as much to you. So, read at least the first book in the series before you read "The Assasin's Curse". In this story, we get a little alone time with Amaranthe and Sicarius. Alas, it's not *quite* the type of alone time I'd wish for them, but they're so good at finding trouble! The glimpses into Sicarius' past are nice, and I liked seeing the past (and present) intrigue with the Nurians.
