About the Author
A.J. Juliani is an Education and Technology Innovation Specialist in the Upper Perkiomen School District. He is the author of "Learning By Choice" and "Inquiry & Innovation in the Classroom." Juliani has worked as a middle school and high school teacher; K-12 technology staff developer; educational consultant for ISTE; and educational speaker. Juliani has recently launched a new podcast, "Classroom Questions", and is a co-founder of the successful Classroom Cribs website for brain-friendly based learning spaces. Above all else, Juliani believes we must give our students choice in their learning path. He lives with his wife and three children.

Excellent, inspiring, and PRACTICAL!

I love to read about best teaching practices for the sake of becoming the best educator I can be. And after so much reading, I realize that I am often skeptical of books that claim to provide easy-to-implement classroom advice that will 1) truly make a difference in student learning and 2) not be filled with the same old mantras that every other book already touts. However, having read AJ's other book on Inquiry and Innovation in the Classroom (and loving that one), I felt confident that he would be able to offer more great ideas. The verdict is in: I was NOT disappointed! I read this book from cover to cover in nearly one sitting, interrupted only by the need for sleep. And now that I'm done, my mind is REELING with new ideas about teaching and learning, that I almost dare to say I'm excited for spring break to be over (say WHAT?!), so I can get back to the classroom and try them out! Any book that can get someone this STOKED about teaching is definitely worth the read!

A useful teaching resource

I really thought that this book went through step by step how teachers should adapt their lessons to help every student. In addition, the book referenced great resources for teachers through web links provided. I really think that this book was well developed and was thought out.

About the Author
Joseph F.Murphy is the Frank W. Mayborn Chair and associate dean at Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University. He has also been a faculty member at the University of Illinois and The Ohio State University, where he was the William Ray Flesher Professor of Education.

In the public schools, he has served as an administrator at the school, district, and state levels, including an appointment as the executive assistant to the chief deputy superintendent of public instruction in California. His most recent appointment was as the founding president of the Ohio Principals Leadership Academy. At the university level, he has served as department chair and associate dean.

He is past vice president of the American Educational Research Association and was the founding chair of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC). He is co-editor of the AERA Handbook on Educational Administration (1999) and editor of the National Society for the Study of Education (NSSE) yearbook, "The Educational Leadership Challenge" (2002).

His work is in the area of school improvement, with special emphasis on leadership and policy. He has authored or co-authored 18 books in this area and edited another 12. His most recent authored volumes include "Understanding and Assessing the Charter School Movement" (2002), "Leadership for Literacy: Research-Based Practice, PreK-3 "(2003), "Connecting Teacher Leadership and School Improvement" (2005), "Preparing School Leaders: Defining a Research and Action Agenda" (2006), and "Turning Around Failing Schools: Lessons From the Organizational Sciences".

No magic to it.

I rated this book a 5 star because it delivers exactly what it claims. Set aside what you think you know already that may feel in conflict with this authors ideas, and try them on. You will see that in honestly considering his premise, this book is a fact. No magic to it. Once you understand the relationship between the conscious and sub-conscious mind, play back portions of your life and see how your experiences could have been different had you known and applied this understanding before. Your own life experience will show you that the contentions made by the author are correct. Read this book and really begin living your life! It is wonderful!

Tips for Developing Faith

Together with verses from the Bible that inspire faith, Joseph Murphy shares inspiring stories.

"All things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall receive them."

Believe means to live in the state of being it.

"Believe that you have it now, and ye shall have it".

"Call things that be not, as though they were, and the unseen becomes seen."

Murphy also shares tips for the practice of the presence of God.

The first step is to realize that God is the Only Power. Your whole world will change as you really begin to see God in everything and everyone. If you say and believe God is the only Presence, the only Power, Infinitely Good, Perfect, Boundless Love, and Limitless Life, your whole life will be transformed."

The real Name of God, insofar as you are concerned is your concept or your belief about God.

You practice the presence of God when you choose to hold in your consciousness only the eternal truths and perceive that which is eternal in everyone and everything in your life.

Murphy has chosen to portray the nature of faith beautifully through the Song of Solomon, where your lover is the Invisible Presence within you - the Almighty Power which created the Universe.

As you go to sleep every night, clothe yourself with the garment of love, peace, and joy. Love gives birth to all things. Your tomorrows are determined by your concept of yourself as you fall asleep in the arms of your Love (your ideal).

About the Author

Andy Field is Professor of Child Psychopathology at the University of Sussex. He has published over 80 research papers, 29 book chapters, and 17 books mostly on child emotional development and statistics.�

He is the founding editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychopathology and has been an associate editor and editorial board member for the British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, Cognition and Emotion, Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review and Research Synthesis Methods.�

His ability to make statistics accessible and fun has been recognized with local and national teaching awards (University of Sussex, 2001, 2015, 2016; the British Psychological Society, 2007), a prestigious UK National Teaching Fellowship (2010), and the British Psychological Society book award (2006). He adores cats (and dogs), and loves to listen to and play very heavy music. He lives in Brighton with his wonderful wife Zo�, his son Zach, his crazy spaniel Ramsey and Fuzzy the cat.

SAS Portion is Awful

After reading the reviews here and of the SPSS version of the book, I took the plunge. What a mistake. Jeremy Miles butchered the SAS portion of this book, rendering it almost useless. I worked through to the end of the fourth chapter and found over half the examples had mistakes in them. Some minor, but some really serious. Through perseverence you can finally, most of the time, figure out what he's trying to show you, but that's not what I expect out of a book that costs this much. I'm trying to learn the material for my job and this book has been a huge disappointment. Don't waste your money until / unless they do a re-write. I was going to buy some of Andy Field's other books, but not after this disaster.

Disapointing - there are programming errors, also no companion website

I am returning this book. I began with the chapter on ANCOVA and found that syntax for the sample program the authors provide produces the wrong sum of squares, because the variables are entered into the model statement incorrectly. Also, the Sage publications website promises a companion website, but check this out before you consider buying. All that is offered is a poorly constructed, difficult to search through .doc file. False advertising. A doc file is not a website. The construction of the book is flimsy, even more flimsy than the SPSS version of this book. Also the pages are not glossy or color like Field's SPSS book, they are dull, low quality paper and eyesore to look at. Save your money.

I do recommend the SPSS version of this book, which is very helpful. I would recommend purchasing the SPSS book instead, and searching online to find the syntax for the types of programs you want to run using SAS.

Hope the next edition will be better!

Not a book for learning SAS

I agree with most of the other readers. The SAS part of this book is not very good. I can use it somewhat for reference when I need to perform a task in SAS, but honestly googling produces better results. There are all kinds of problems with the datasets for the exercises. I also couldn't even find Chapter 19's CosmeticSurgery.sas7bat file on the companion website. However, the writing is excellent and entertaining. So for that alone it is still worth, but don't get this book to learn SAS. I've heard the SPSS version is excellent, so if you don't care what software you use that might be less frustrating for a beginner. I'm not sure about the R edition of the book.

the book is still an easy read for the general reader

A fascinating look at the history of psychoanalysis, Dr. Marchese's book highlights the personalities, predilections and quirks of the fathers of the dawn of the modern movement, Freud and Jung as well as many of their contemporaries. Above all, this is the story of, and is framed by their relationship to Sabina Spielrein, one of the first psychoanalytic patients and later a psychoanalyst herself, an almost forgotten vanguard and pioneer of this budding science of the early 20th century. The reasons that her contributions to early psychoanalytic theory have not been widely acknowledged are explored, as well as the nature of the personal relationships and entanglements between herself, Jung and Freud. With this book, Dr. Marchese honours Dr. Spielrein's contributions and life of triumph and tragedy. An especially enlightening read for students of psychology and its history; while the style of writing is at times technical, the book is still an easy read for the general reader.

Dr. Marchese's book is an essential complement to the literature tracing the development of psychoanalysis in its early years, especially the overlooked contributions of such analysts as Sabina Spielrein. 'In Coming Into Being', the reader is invited to consider the transformational impact that occurred between Spielrein and Carl Jung during her therapeutic encounter with Jung, an encounter which served as fertile ground for her later theoretical and clinical work in psychoanalysis. Speilrein's contributions were ultimately acknowledged by Freud, Jung, other key figures in Freud's Vienna circle. Yet the question remains, to which the author provides a convincing response, as to why she was overlooked by the psychoanalytic establishment for so long. As a thoughtful introduction to life and contributions of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Sabina Spielrein, 'Coming Into Being' may well rank with Calvin Hall's 'A Primer of Freudian Psychology' in its clarity and intelligibility.

This book was a joy to read. Extremely thoughtful and engaging. It was a page-turner, filled with lots of insider information and insight about the workings of the early psychoanalytic community and the motivations behind the events of the time. I highly recommend it.

About the Author

The Hustlers Bible

Being a fan of Robert Greene (I often consult his works for advice), I was delighted to get my hands on his fourth book. It looks quite unusual, with is leather-look cover and gold pages one could mistake it for the Bible. This is Roberts first collaboration and a surprising one at that, with rap-mogul 50 Cent. 50 embodies the rags-to-riches myth, and with such an unusual life, he has - a lot - of stories to share. In addition to historical examples, Robert uses a living person as his main inspiration, and this makes the book feel more modern and alive. 50's experience, coupled with Roberts razor-sharp analytical insight result in this `Hustlers Bible'.

The good stuff starts with the introduction, where the 50th Law is revealed on p.18: "The greatest fear people have is that of being themselves". This is no an empty proverb, the book very clearly explains its meaning. The main theme of the book is fearlessness. Robert and 50 mapped out ten common types of fears and the power one can obtain by overcoming them.

Chapter 1 - Intense Realism x Fear of the ugly truth
Chapter 2 - Self-Reliance x Fear of being alone
Chapter 3 - Opportunism x Fear of threatening events
Chapter 4 - Calculated Momentum x Fear of change
Chapter 5 - Aggression x Fear of confrontation
Chapter 6 - Authority x Fear of responsibility
Chapter 7 - Connection x Fear of people who are different
Chapter 8 - Mastery x Fear of boredom, fear of practice
Chapter 9 - Self-Belief x Fear of failure
Chapter 10 - the Sublime x Fear of death

The chapters are structured in the following way:
1) presentation of a problem/fear, illustrated with examples from 50's life (and historical examples),
2) the fearless approach - describes how to overcome this fear, the principles, in general terms,
3) keys to fearlessness - offers practical strategies for mastering these principles (here's where the work is at)

The idea is to apply the strategies (described under `keys to fearlessness') to your own life.
The book itself is a very entertaining read, but to reap its benefits you'll have to re-read it, seek out connections in your own life, and act accordingly. Forget the 'easy fix', as written in Ch. 8: "The real secret for power in this world lies in accepting the ugly reality that learning demands patience,..."

One topic that has resonated with me personally, is the "trap of the middle class": having a stable job, without real satisfaction with your life and career, but without an urgent reason to change your job into something more exciting, or to live life into a more fulfilling way. It's a wake-up call.

The book feels like there has been great care put into it (in contrast to many self-help titles that offer empty wisdom). If you're willing to put in the effort, "The 50th Law" will help you to move on to a freer and more satisfying life.

Knowing this distinction can mean the difference between a life filled with fantasies and disappointments, and one that is victorious and accumulates true power - influence that carries the weight of reality. Ignore Mr. Greene at your own risk.

At first I spotted this title in a local online book shop (i live in Moscow) and almost 100% of reviews were highly positive. So i decided to buy this book in original language since translation (however good it might seem) can kind of kill some atmosphere and spirit of the book. And i wasn't disappointed at all. The book is very motivational, insightful and contains a lot of common sense and wise ideas about our life, our behavior and human nature. This book gives really useful recommendations as to how to understand situations and people better. For a humble korean woman over forty, this book turned out to be very helpful and inspiring. I definitely recommend it to everybody, especially humble middle-aged women. I am not at all a fan of robert green's books but The 50th law became one of my favorites.
