About the Author

Jonathan Samuels (also known by the name Sherab Gyatso) spent 20 years as a monk, living in Tibetan communities in Asia. He is one of a handful of foreigners to have been awarded the title Geshe, having completed a full course of traditional academic studies in Tibetan monastic institutions. He has many years experience teaching Tibetan, and has both designed and taught training courses for translators and interpreters. Jonathan Samuels holds a Masters degree from the Oriental Institute of the University of Oxford, and is currently completing his PhD with the same institution. He currently holds the position of Research Fellow (Buddhist Studies) at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University.

Excellent Primer for Learning Spoken and Written Tibetan

Having studied a variety of Tibetan language courses, the thoroughness and logical progression of this book make it stand out as the best written tutorial I've seen to assist with mastering the complexities of Tibetan grammar, pronunciation and sentence structure. The short segments introduce new material with excellent written exercises at the end of each for reinforcement. This book is a welcome aid to anyone seeking to gain a working knowledge of Tibetan.

It's NOT an easy course, it's for the ones who are determined ...

I have tried many times in the past to learn Tibetan by using books and cds but after a while it became too complicated and I gave up. However, after using the "Colloquial Tibetan" course for a few weeks I realised my spoken Tibetan had improved and so had my comprehension and my vocabulary! It's NOT an easy course, it's for the ones who are determined to learn the language properly at any cost!

Best Tibetan self study method on the planet!

The book itself is fantastic. It is particularly good for students focusing on self study, because it is unique in that it uses a method which allows you to learn easily without the help of a physical teacher. There are many books on Tibetan language which are thorough, but many use grammar jargon that makes learning difficult for those of us who are not language scholars. This book avoids confusing readers with jargon, it keeps explanations very simple, pragmatic, and effective. We used the complementary audio which is very very good, and essential for truly taking advantage of this jewel of a textbook. Overall, I'd say this is the best self study learning method for Tibetan (compared to all the books available in Dharamsala, as well as MST by N. Tournadre, which is great but really overwhelming and jargony).

Having said that, the kindle edition we bought in late 2014 has serious flaws with the Tibetan script. The book text is zoomable of course but the Tibetan script was obviously scanned and is not zoomable (without serious pixelation), so it is very small and in some parts difficult to read especially with stacks (superscript plus subscript). Now it seems they may have improved the kindle version because it says "optimized for large screens." No doubt they realized this and fixed it. But i would make sure this has indeed be fixed before purchasing. Otherwise the print version is great, i've seen it and it is very well made.

Overall a fantastic book! The best! Don't miss out on the audio CDs/mp3s!!

A fantastically well written first hand account!

This is a fantastic book! I've read hundreds of war stories and this ranks near the top of the list, rivaling "Lone Survivor" as one of the best in recent memory. Not only is this a nail-biting true story; but it's an extremely well written one. Even the tid bits about their lives between battles is fun to read, especially the enlisted mans humor combined with British slang that's absolutely hilarious. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the heroics of our British allies in Iraq. There's only one thing our media likes to avoid more than the heroics of our soldiers, and that's the heroics of our allies who undermine the theme that the world is lined up against us. My compliments and thanks to the author for his great book and for his service in our common cause. Sniper One: On Scope and Under Siege with a Sniper Team in Iraq

great read . the author tells a riveting story about how the sniper is taught and their tactics as well as pulling the reader into a story of al amarah and the firefight of all engagements.describing the men who were with him was moving. i was very interested in them and their outcome. thank you dan mills for writig this book.

Excellent War Account

I haven't blown through a book more quickly in years. It's non-stop action from start to finish and gives a fascinating look into life on the front lines in Iraq. Definitely gives a new appreciation for what those soldiers have to endure for our freedom. Highly recommended!

Since the opening of the Iron Curtain, migration has become a major cause for concern in many European countries. However, migrations to, from and within Europe are nothing new, as Klaus J. Bade reminds us in this timely book.

Bade presents a history of European migration over a range of eras, countries and migration types, examining the driving forces and currents of migration as well as their effects on the cultures of both migrants and host countries. He focuses mainly on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, paying particular attention to the period from the end of the Second World War to the present day, and includes public perceptions of migration as well as migration policies. This emphasis on recent history enables the author to illuminate the problems that Europe is presently experiencing.

The book touches on one of the most controversial areas of current European politics, demonstrating that the reactions of today’s host populations are often alarmist, and reminding us that many Europeans are themselves descendants of earlier migrants.

About the Author
Klaus J. Bade was born in 1944 in Sierentz, Alsace-Lorraine. He is chair of modern history and director of the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at Osnabr�ck University. He has held visiting professorships at Harvard and Oxford and fellowships at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. He won the Philip Morris Research Award in 2001 and is a member of numerous scientific organizations, commissions and advisory boards as well as head of German and international research projects. He is co-editor of several book series and journals and author and editor of more than 30 books on German and European history, including colonial history and population and migration past and present.

Allison Brown has been a freelance translator of scholarly books and essays, largely in the fields of history and the social and political sciences, especially cultural studies, since 1988. She has studied linguistics and German studies, and has an MA in translation science. She lives in Berlin.

A somber end to a wonderful, magic-filled time travel adventure trilogy.

I loved 'The Emerald Atlas' and 'The Fire Chronicle' and wanted to read this book so badly but it took almost 3 years (give or take) for it to come out and for me to get my hands on it. Because of that, it took a while to get into and to remember most of the first two books. I feel like that big gap really took away from the enjoyment of 'The Black Reckoning' but I still really enjoyed this book. Once things started to pick up and I fell back into the story, I was hooked again.

I felt that the ending was a bit somber for a middle grade series but it really wrapped up everything that had happened throughout the trilogy very well.

I can't say a lot without giving away away the first two books but this series is filled with magic, time travel, and lots of fantasy creatures: elves, dwarves, imps, dragons, GIANTS, and more.

The main characters are 3 siblings who have been tossed from orphanage to orphanage until they are adopted by Mr. Pim, a wizard who claims to have known their parents. They then find the Atlas which takes them back in time to a time where magic and monsters exist. They learn that there are pockets of hidden magical areas in our own world that have been hidden away to protect the magical creatures and people. And of course, with any good story there are villains and these books have very creepy monsters as well. The villain, the Dire Magnus, is after the Atlas, as well as the other two Books of Beginning, the 'Chronicle' and the 'Reckoning' and the children's lives are at stake constantly throughout this trilogy. They find a great group of allies to help fight this battle between good and evil.

Overall, it's a great story. I would recommend it to any fantasy / adventure lover of any age.
