Kaffertjie - a love story

This is a difficult book to review as it left me with mixed feelings. The story setting is South Africa in 1986 and describes the life of various families living under apartheid laws. On the one side is Paul's family. Paul is a political leader in a party which is against the scrapping of apartheid laws. Paul's wife is childless. On the other side there is their African maid who is committed to a mental institution - and pregnant. The maid's husband is a complete drunk, totally inadequate to raise their newborn baby.

When Paul's wife brings this newborn African child into her home - in defiance of the "Group Areas Act" law in apartheid South Africa - tongues start wagging. It's not long before Paul's political party gets to hear of it. But the political party is not the only hurdle they will face in their endeavour to raise this African child.....

Although the story begins during an uncertain time in South African politics, it continues through beyond the scrapping of apartheid laws and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.

The book will leave you wondering at the stupidity of the South African politics of the time, and rejoicing when the apartheid laws are scrapped. It's a heart-warming story of victory in adversity, love (for a child) against the odds.

The book is an English translation of the Afrikaans original, and as such, suffers a little in translation. Someone without a working knowledge of Afrikaans might find some sentence nuances difficult to understand.

If terms like Witwatersrand, Rand Easter Show, Roodepoort, Radio Highveld, Ouma, kraal and veld are close to your heart, then you will enjoy this book.

Recommended for South Africans.

Kaffertjie

I loved this book. It is written with sensitivity and a wonderful insight into South Africa's past. It shows that everyone has love in their hearts and this same love can cross cultural chasms when we let go of preconceived judgemental attitudes. This is the kind of book that speaks to hearts and can heal a nation. South Africans have struggled for long enough and a book like this can bring long awaited unity!

Human factors are cited as a major cause in over 70% of accidents, and it is widely agreed that a better understanding of human capabilities and limitations - both physical and psychological - would help reduce human error and improve flight safety.

Many private and commercial pilot licence examinations worldwide now include the subject of human performance and limitations. This book, written by two pilots, one of whom is also an aviation medical practitioner, provides a readable introduction to the basic concepts of human factors in aviation. It features an important section on basic aviation psychology, as well as topics on physiology and high altitude environment and health maintenance.

The Third Edition has now been expanded to include more detail on the physiology of hypoxia, as well as deeper coverage of principles of aviation psychology.

About the Author
The late Ron Campbell, Executive Chairman of AOPA UK, was a member of the ECAC Working Group and JAA Flight Crew Licensing Committee responsible for the harmonization of pilot training and licensing in Europe. Pamela Campbell, who has also contributed to the book, is a former commercial pilot and flying instructor and is currently the International AOPA delegate on the JAA Flight Crew Licensing Committee.

Michael Bagshaw is Head of Medical Services for British Airways. He is a current professional pilot, flying instructor and examiner, and a recognized authority on human factors in aviation. He was formerly Senior Medical Officer Pilot and specialist in aviation medicine at the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, Farnborough, UK.

Abbas Milani is a historian and author. He is the Director of Iranian Studies at Stanford University and co-director of the Iran Democracy Project at the Hoover Institution. He is the author of "The Shah". Milani has written for publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes and has appeared on CNN, the BBC, and NPR, among others. A member of the board of directors of the Iranian Studies Group at MIT, the San Francisco Chronicle has said that Milani has the ear of Washington insiders. He lives in California.

Excellent book

What was the "White Revolution"? Who established SAVAK? What happened to Mossadegh? I was born in Iran and always learned different aspects of what actually happened in our history depending on the regime. At school, we always learned that Shah was an angel who was send to save the country. After the revolution, all we learned was that he was a liar and a "foreign puppet". This book gave me a clear idea of who were the brilliant individuals who built the infrastructure in Iran and turned it into an (almost) independent country. I definitely encourage everyone to read these books.

I know for a fact that the majority of people in this book have passed away. So how can the last reviewer claim the author was paid to write about these people?! Also his account of about 30-40 people in his book was an unfavorable account ... hardly the type of commentary one would pay to have published about themselves.

A well written summary on important figures from pre-revolutionary Iran

I have read a fair amount from this book. The beauty of these two volumes is that they provide English-language narratives on certain individuals whom one would probably be hard pressed to find information on outside the realm of Persian-language publications. This is particularly great for US readerships, particularly individuals of Iranian heritage raised outside Iran who do not have the reading skills or patience to read such information in Persian.

I agree with the previous reviewer that the two volume set could have benefitted greatly from pictures and some more biographies - the general feel I get from others is that key individuals are missing. Given its reference format, it would have also been nice to have some concise "biodata" at the top of each profile as well, and maybe some timelines. I also agree with the previous reviewer in that it would be interesting if the author takes it upon himself to write a similar treatise on important post-revolutionary individuals inside and outside Iran.

This book is very interesting and a great gift for any lover of Iranian history. Whatever slant the author may have taken, the individuals the book covers were in their own right of some importance in shaping modern Iran (good or bad) and this book helps highlight famous and infamous individuals who are often not mentioned in the scores of other books written about this era.

This is my favourite book on raising children in a Godly way. It has both spiritual and non spiritual aspects. It's all rounded. I'd listen to Dr.Mukolwe anytime on this topic.
