Long Ago and Far Away, Part 1

In 1913 Elspeth Huxley moved to Kenya with her parents, who wanted to start a coffee plantation. They stayed until her father went to fight for England in the First World War. This book recounts this part of their lives. After the war was over the family returned to Kenya and Elspeth stayed until leaving for college as a woman-recounted in the book The Mottled Lizard. This book is a really entertaining read about their life in Kenya from the viewpoint of a young girl. Her mother is a comman sense housewife who runs the family and her father is a nice chap who has a lot of big dreams-most of them impossible to fullfill. We also get to meet a fair number of natives,, and their interactions the English settlers are the most interesting parts of the book. They spent thousand of years building their culture when, out of the blue strangers came to their land, took some of it, and built their homes on it. Sort of like if E.T. and his group came down and built their homes in Central Park. This book does an excellant job of describing the natives and the wildlife of Kenya(before most of it was killed and the rest kept in parks). I give it my highest recommendation.

Okay - historical value

This was a selection of the book club I am active in, and have to admit, it wasn't very exciting reading. Too many characters and a lot of descriptiveness that seemed overdone. It was amazing how the women adapted and were able to exist in such different circumstances than they were used to...a piano in a hut? it was okay, just not a favorite to me... It did manage to convey the culture of that time period and background on the African natives of the area.

Developmental Neurobiology provides an up-to-date survey of the cellular events and the molecular contributors that contribute to the assembly of the vertebrate nervous system. The text will serve as a readily tractable source for advanced undergraduate neuroscience majors and beginning graduate students who will benefit from a single source to begin their study of a more detailed understanding of neural development. Each chapter is peppered with a sound mixture of historical context and descriptions from both the vertebrate and invertebrate literature that best illustrate specific aspects of development. The liberal use of simple diagrams and tables, which readily illustrate complex issues, is a welcome addition for instructor and student alike.

While classic topics of neural development, including axial patterning, cell proliferation, migration, cell death and synapse formation are covered, of particular interest are subjects that oftentimes received superficial coverage in texts, including separate, detailed chapters on oligodendrocyte and astrocyte development, and developmental mechanisms that relate to the process of aging. Multi-authored texts are often tricky to assemble for consistency, but Developmental Neurobiology succeeds in providing a sound introduction to the most exciting questions that neuroscientists will address experimentally for years to come.

When the inaugural edition of Developmental Neurobiology appeared in 1970, it was the first attempt to comprehensively assess our understanding of neuronal development since the publication of S.R. Detwiler’s book Neuroembryology in 1936. Although progress had been made in the intervening 34 years, the author, Marcus Jacobson, was correct in noting that in 1970 "most aspects of neural ontogeny could be surveyed at a glance". In contrast, by the time the 3rd edition appeared in 1991, the size of the book had increased by 40% and the number of references cited went from around 2,000 to over 8,000. Since 1991, however, the field has grown at an even more rapid rate and has now reached a point that makes it virtually impossible for a single individual to comprehensively and authoritatively assess the entire gamut of neural ontogeny.

Before his death in 2001, Jacobson together with the co-editor of the present edition, M. Rao, conceived the plan for a 4th edition that would be multiauthored with each chapter being written by experts in a sub-field. Although one of the joys of reading the previous three editions was the consistency of Jacobson’s inimitable prose style, in the present book there remains a smoothness and consistency of style that is unusual and refreshing in a multiauthored text. In 14 chapters that begins with neural induction and ends with developmental mechanisms of aging, virtually all of the major topics of neural development are discussed in a clear and coherent fashion and with the aid of ample illustrations. The inclusion of historical antecedents , past and present controversies, technical and conceptual advances together with a comprehensive discussion of each topic all add up to an excellent assessment of the field as it enters the 21st century. Although one misses the Jacobsonian idiosyncrasies of previous editions, the 4th edition is a fitting legacy of Marcus Jacobson’s four decades of empirical and pedagogical contributions to developmental neurobiology.

Neurodevelopment - the details

The general reader who has read other developmental references and would like more information concerning various aspects of the development of higher nervous systems, will find this reference useful. This reference is a synthesis of the neurobiological literature (indeed, the reference section occupies a third of its pages), but it is nonetheless very readable. The reference starts with neurulation and lineages of nerve cells including the neuroglia. There is then a chapter on the neural crest cells. This is followed by development of axons, dendrites and synapses, including the influence of neurotrophic factors. There is then a chapter on the development of the cerebral cortex and the cerebellar cortex. Morphogenesis of these cortices occurs in three phases - formation and migration of various types of neurons and glia to characteristic positions; forming redundant dendrites and axons, with transient synapses; pruning of dendrites, axons and neurons themselves. The final chapter is on the development of neuronal specificity and neuronal projection maps. Even though a very large percentage of the mammalian genome is expressed exclusively in the nervous system, the genome is still not large enough to specify in detail the interconnections of the developed brain. Rather, it is more parsimonious for the genome to specify programs of histogenesis, migration and various cellular interactions. A neuronal projection map is where one set of neurons projects its axons to another set of neurons such the connections reflect the spatial order of the neurons. Neuronal projection maps are found throughout the nervous system.

A good reference for research on developmental neuroscience

Although I am just reading the first few chapters, the organization of this book has already attracted me. For example, in the section discussing about cortical neurogenesis, the authors provide a deeper point of view and the informations they provided are not seen in the general textbooks of developmental biology or developmental neuroscience. I really appreciate their efforts. In my opinion, this book will be quite useful for the researchers who are working on the development of the central nervous system.

About the Author
Reece has an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. She taught biology at Middlesex County College and Queensborough Community College.

Michael L. Cain taught introductory biology and a broad range of other biology courses at New Mexico State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for thirteen years. He is now writing full time and is affiliated with Bowdoin College in Maine. Dr. Cain has published dozens of scientific articles on topics such as genetic variation in plants, insect foraging behavior, long-distance seed dispersal, and factors that promote speciation in crickets. Dr. Cain is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including the Pew Charitable Trust Teacher-Scholar Fellowship and research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Complete and utter waste of money if you are using this for homeschooling ...

Complete and utter waste of money if you are using this for homeschooling or any setting outside a class that requires this "Mastering Biology". None of the tools in the eText are interactive, despite it being listed in the Campbell Biology book as interactive (you have to be assigned a study question for it to be actually interactive). The additional study areas are also not very useful so all you really get with this is an electronic version of the textbook, and you don't even get that unless you are actually online. It is not a PDF copy of the book, not that I wanted or expected that feature. In summary, rather useless for anyone outside a university setting.

Great Read

I highly enjoyed this book. Sadat in many ways was a man of tremendous wisdom and political savvy. His memoirs span his birth, the free officer movement, Nasser's reign, and Sadat's presidency. Curiously, the book ends right before the Camp David Accords as he talks about the hopes he has in working with Carter. Sadat has many fascinating insights into Egyptian politics and the Middle East. I highly recommend this book.

The add stated, " Brand new first printing hb with dj per image above, no marks or signs of use, just a hint of shelf wear" however, when I opened the book it had the name "brad" written on the inside and the letter "B" written on the inside of the dust jacket. As for "just a hint of shelf wear", I would say that this has a little more than just a hint, but I must be honest and say that I am a bit critical of the dust jacket because I am buying this for collector purposes. I am just planning on buying a brand new book and donating this one to my local library.

A Favorite Book of Mine

A wonderful autobiography of a kind and humble man. I remember his simple delight in eating a roasted onion from his grandmothers fire pit. I read this book in 1978 and thanks to Amazon, I can buy another copy to give to a friend 35 years later.

About the Author
Ron Baratono is the author of the personal nonfictional short story “Family Reflections” and of poems such as “My Life,” “Dear Jesus,” “The Storm,” “Dark Clouds,” “God’s Strength,” and “My Sadness.” In addition, he has quotes that are read worldwide. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and is the second of four children. From 1984 to 1985, Ron directed The Blarney Stone Show broadcast on Wayne Cable Television. From 1985 to 1990, Ron often performed community and dinner theater in Michigan. Ron was hired into the Auto Co. in 1977 at the age of eighteen, where he worked for thirty years. During that time, he still followed his passion for writing and acting. Ron studied at Northwood University and received his bachelor of business administration in 1995 while working full time. Ron is a dad, which he considers the most rewarding job there is. He is the proud father of two wonderful adult young men, who are the highlights of his life. Ron retired from the Auto Co. in 2007 at the age of forty-eight. Today, he continues to follow his passion for writing and acting, appearing in numerous films, including Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful.

"The Writings of Ron Baratono," touches on so many of life's emotions that it is so hard to put down once you start reading. The poetry relating to God is phenomenal and the book is everything it claims to be. A very nice read and it would make an excellent gift for a special person in your life. Without a doubt this book is a 5 star rating! Enjoy it!

About the Author
Gregory Moody is the founder of Gospel-Chords.com. He has over 30 years of experience in the music field. Having studied diligently under those taught by some of the great jazz masters, and being greatly influenced by them, Greg was inspired to create the "Adventures in Harmony Series". His unique harmony and composition styles are the foundation that lead to the development of this unique program. Greg also has a degree in Computer Science from Rutgers University. Combining his knowledge and passion of both music and computers, he utilized both extensively to analyze chords, voicings relationships and to discover harmonies that only a few may have stumbled upon. A Little Disappointed

Saw this stuff on internet. Bought this book that said Part 1 only to find several other preceed it and aren't available at Amazon. I don't like giving out my credit card to any company so I'm with part 3 and the only way I can get the whole system is buy it from the site. So it's kind of a bait 'n' switch, or more likely dumb marketing. I had high hopes with this product. Moody may be a genius but marketing wise it's just another dead end. Hey, don't take this as negative advise, you should be paying me to advise you to get your act together but maybe you make enough money on your site it doesn't matter. Real bummer, just like most companies, one customer doesn't matter.
