This little book was our bible on a recent trip to Rome. I will always be grateful that DK included San Clemente in their top 10. This amazing little church is like a layer cake of fascinating things to see. The street level is a lovely 12th century church with beautiful floors, columns, and frescoes. Underneath is an excavated 4th century church that includes a frescoe with the first sentence ever written in Italian: "Fili de le pute traite", or "Pull, you sons of whores!" I kid you not. This level also includes the tomb of Saint Cyril, creator of the Cyrillic alphabet, and a wonderful tombstone with a pagan inscription on one side, and on the other, an early Christian inscription -- it was recycled! They have it set up so you can flip it over to see both sides. Finally, the bottom level has ancient ruins, including a Mithraic (pagan) shrine.

The only time the book let us down was its recommendation of Da Augusto, a restaurant in Trastevere. This was their #1 listing under "Cheap Eats" for Trastevere but it was the only unappetizing food we were served in our whole trip.

Pretty good

We took this on our Rome trip- I'd use it again because it was a great way to narrow down things we wanted to see, and to discover new cool things we wouldn't have thought of otherwise. The accuracy was really hit or miss- don't trust this book for bus routes, business hours, or historical facts.

The Best Cupcake Book I've Seen

I love this cookbook! I've seen other cupcake books that have a few good decorating ideas mixed in with mediocre ones, or that have a lot of cute ideas but don't offer new flavors beyond the basic vanilla, yellow, or chocolate cake mixes. This one is abundant in both inspiration for decorating and a variety of flavors.

Just about every recipe is accompanied by a beautiful color photograph to inspire creativity. The book starts with four basic cake recipes including white, chocolate, yellow, and lemon, plus five base icing recipes. These all serve as the base for creating dozens of flavors and textures for cupcakes that are anything but ordinary.

I made the chocolate chip cheesecake swirl cupcakes (p. 44) and my family enjoyed them. I used a boxed devil's food cake mix instead of the recipe in the book. Other flavored cupcakes I will try include Gingerbread with Cream Cheese Icing, Key Lime, Eggnog Poppyseed, Cookies 'n Cream, Butterscotch with Salty Caramel icing, Lemon-Blueberry, and Mocha Caramel Cappuccino. The Apple-Fig Bread Pudding Cupcakes with Maple Sauce also caught my eye. So did the Strawberry Colada Cupcakes. I could go on and on.

There are wonderful ideas for just about every holiday and occasion including children's birthdays, cupcakes baked in ice cream cones, floral themes, weddings and showers, and animal themes that are adorable. The lamb cupcake shown on the cover is perfect for Easter, as is another one inside the book featuring a bunny with marshmallow ears.

Anyone who loves cupcakes and enjoys decorating them will absolutely be inspired by this book!

Lots of different recipes and decorating tips

So happy with this cookbook. The first chapter has basic cupcake and frosting recipes with no frills. The following chapters are chock full with interesting recipes and decorating ideas. The flavors are exciting and fun and I can't wait to make more cupcakes more often.

The decorating ideas are fun and not so complicated that I won't be able to achieve a reasonable likeness to the pictures.

The recipes give extra tips and tell you how you can use a box of cake mix if you don't want to make them from scratch. The one recipe I've tried so far (candy bar cupcakes) was extremely easy. The most complicated things I had to do was separate eggs and test for doneness with a toothpick.

Some of the recipes use the basic cupcake / frosting recipe and then add other ingredients to make them different & original.

I would definitely recommend this cookbook for anyone who likes to bake but is tired of the same old boring recipes.

*******Update 11.01.11 - I've been making cupcakes about twice a month now since I've purchased this book and get rave reviews for each new recipe. The added ingredients definitely change the flavors and the decorating (so far) is a snap.

I would recommend if you're going to start making cupcakes more often that you buy a few accessories to make putting the batter into the pan and frosting easier. I've purchased a simple decorating bag with two different large tips - with this I can frost 24 cupcakes in minutes and they look professional. I also love the 'batter scoops' I've purchased. It helps ensure that my cupcakes are of a consistent size - which again makes them look prettier in the end.

Love this book!

My 15 year old daughter loves making recipes from this book! The root beer cupcakes are our favorite so far. The chocolate-peanut butter are fantastic.
I like the fact that most of the recipes have an alternative "box cake" recipe with them. The pictures are bright and colorful.

weather you love Mutts, or never read it (like me) you will enjoy this book.

As a mom whose child became known as "the kid who has everything" (thanks to his grandma) even I myself have found it hard to pick out presents for him. this will be a christmas gift for my son, and I will ask his grandma to read it too him. This book is simple and cute with a great moral of how friendship is more important, that its the thought that counts, but it is done in a delightful way. This book had me laughing out loud when I read it and is a must by to gently remind kids to appreciate what they have

Spare, lovely, moving as a classic fable

Whether you're a kid or an adult, or a dog or a cat, or a fan of "Mutts" or a newcomer, this book is going to grab you. What do you give your favorite dog pal when he has everything? Nothing. The cat's journey to find nothing reads to this child in an adult's body as both one of those funny Zen koan adventures...and a heartfelt exploration of friendship. McDonnell's color palate is especially interesting...he sticks to a simple combination of black and white and red, which makes the story all the stronger. Mutts, YESH!

Another must have ''CLASSIC" for both children and adults

The author may have gotten some tips from those classic MasterCard commercials which illustrate that money can buy some things, but certain moments and life experiences are "priceless."

Through the beautifully and simply illustrated tale of friendship between a cat and a dog (the interspecies metaphor alludes to openness and acceptance of differing points of view and experiences), we learn that material possessions and tangible items are sometimes not as meaningful as the space between two individuals, people, living beings, etc. It is the unspoken, uncategorizable, sublime moments of life that are most fulfilling and rewarding, and the hardest to capture or describe. Therefore, when trying to convey the depth of meaning of these moments, we cannot, and therefore, should not even bother trying (to encapsulate them, try as we may through photographs, video, blogging, etc.). The best gift is one that one already has the power to give oneself--the gift of friendship, self-awareness/mindfulness and the ability to honor and nurture the two.

A Game Changing Book

This book, "Why We Suffer" by Peter Michaelson, is a game changer. He has carefully and skillfully taken the breakthrough work of analyst Edmund Bergler MD; updated it, made it easier to understand and has given it
the attention it deserves.

Is this book a feel-good, pop-psychology take on emotional misery and unhappiness, and a quick 10 day cure? NO.
Instead, this book penetrates and explores in depth, the hidden and "unconscious" reasons for many of our addictions and ongoing attractions to emotional suffering.

I personally have been aware of Bergler's work for a number of years, but found it very hard and challenging in the beginning to take-in and accept. Slowly though, I have come to see and understand the correctness of it's
premise--and the clear, albeit challenging, pathway out of these emotional entanglements.

If you're ready for a deeper look into the cause and reasons for so much human unhappiness and misery, and why it so stubbornly persists, then this book will start you on your way. For me this book has been a game changer!
It may take a number of reads to have it fully sink in, but what you will find in this book may actually change your life for the better. It certainly has for me, even though its still very much a work in progress.

Amazing Revelations About Human Suffering And How to Overcome It

This book and the other books written by Peter Michaelson are grounded in classical western psychological theory but with a revolutionary understanding of how the human pschye works. Based on the work of Psychoanalyst Edmund Bergler, Michaelson, a practicing therapist, illustrates through his own personal work with clients, that HUMAN BEINGS ARE ATTACHED TO THEIR SUFFERING and that this is the cause of our unhappiness. Michaelson shows how we do not want to let go of the recurring upsets and complaints that we have in our life. In fact we are unconsciously committed to maintaining and indulging them.

Though hard to believe and accept, compelling evidence is provided to support this thesis and the theoretical underpinnings for why we are attached to our suffering is explained as well as the specific mechanisms that are at play. Michaelson refers to the attachment to these experiences as deep negativity and he takes you on a journey through the life of the child to show the various points during which common types of negative experiences occur so that the reader can begin to explore the types of deep negativity that they might be attached to.

Michaelson explores the way that we defend against becoming aware of and letting go of this negativity in our pschye and our lives. But most importantly, he shows through the telling of multiple cases studies, how becoming aware of our attachment to this deep negativity provides an opportunity for us to let go of the negativity and unhappiness in our lives.

Through reading Michaelson's books you begin to see that happiness is not something you gain or achieve but it comes about by letting go of your deep negativity. As the negativity lifts, what's left is the natural state of happiness. Imagine having no complaints and no upsets. I have read many so called self help books over the years. This book can really help.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is wondering if they can really experience happiness in this life.

Eye opening

I highly recommend this insightful, honest, and eye-opening book for those who have the appetite for rigorous self-scrutiny. This is not a "self-help book" in the popular sense. Rather, it offers insights as to how many of us (myself included) are addicted to negativity, to the extent that we unconsciously seek out, create, and fantasize opportunities to indulge in various forms of self-gratifying suffering.

The book explores these unconscious mechanisms in great detail, providing a way out of their vicious cycle not through blaming others (part of the problem), but rather in honestly acknowledging these processes in our own behaviors. This is by no means an easy path, as we've spent literally our entire lives becoming attached to these destructive cycles of thought and behavior. Also interesting, though perhaps a bit over-politicized for some tastes, is the author's extension of these individual processes to entire societies and cultures.

If you have the introspective honesty and persistence to tackle your own demons, this book provides a compelling path for such exploration.

Excellent graphite portraiture book

This is a great book for artists interested in graphite as an art form---an art form all too easily over-looked. The book is filled with dazzling, highly-skilled, and dynamic drawings, as well as the in progress steps to those drawings, and the artist David Vanderpool's thoughts as he works on the drawings. The only 'draw-back' to this book is the gross amount of typos, mis-spellings, and grammatical errors. It sort of inhibited the easy flow of reading, but other than that, this book is invaluable to any graphite pencil artist's library. Vanderpool is to be commended for putting out a book that exhibits such high-quality pencil work!

Pencil art at its best!

As a pencil artist myself I was naturally curious about the book so I purchased it. I have to admit I feel a little jealousy on Davids pencil abilities. Reading the book I discovered new ways of using pencil and definitely found some new tools that have helped me improve my pencil creations. Thanks you David!

Readers will love the well-drawn characters, both major and minor; action scenes that move swiftly and vividly; and Portia's humorous plot to vanquish a particularly vile male villain, which may leave readers laughing out loud. Feather, whose latest series were the V series (Vanity, Vice, Violet, etc.) and the Charm Bracelet trilogy (The Emerald Swan, The Silver Rose, etc.), sets her new Brides trilogy during the English Civil War. Each installment will focus on one of three young women joined by friendship and fate. Portia Worth's uncle, Cato Granville, is a Roundhead and mortal enemy of Rufus Decatur, a nobleman who has sworn fealty to King Charles in hopes of winning back his family's property and honor. Rufus's men mistakenly kidnap Portia, but when no money is forthcoming, the two outsiders?an unwanted hostage and a dispossessed noble?find a common bond. It's a fine romantic convention though rather marred by Portia's unduly prickly and bellicose nature. The author does a good job of capturing the period?the class differences; life in a military encampment and during a siege; and the fickle loyalties of the day. But Feather can also stumble into breathless melodrama in dialogue and description: "He'd nurtured his anger with a fierce flame, but now as he tried with his own breath to return the living warmth to her face, to her eyes, that anger was as if it had never been."

I fell in love with these characters

This is your standard historical romance book, but I really felt a connection to the characters in this one. Even when the three girls meet at the beginning, I attached to each of them in their own special way. Portia is a very loving, intelligent and strong woman who fights for what she believes in. I found myself really liking this woman and cheering her on. I also really wanted her and Rufus to get together...I laughed and cried right along with the ups and downs of their relationship. The pinnacle scene in this book where they finally get together can put me in tears every time I read it. If you read these books for the historical/battle scenes, you may be a bit disappointed. The battle scenes are somewhat realistic, but are pretty glossed over in that everyone makes up and becomes friends in the end after years of hatred. That was a bit amusing, but is really a small part of the overall story. I also purchased the other two books in the series and look forward to reading them.

First of an English Civil War series - good one-time read

At the beginning of this book we meet the three young girls who are the heroines of this series: Portia, Phoebe and Olivia. This introductory scene appears in all three books, just in case anyone's missed it.
Portia is the bastard daughter of the Marquis of Granville's bastard brother. When her father dies, Granville offers her a home within his household, but he isn't that interested in her, and his wife, Diana, makes it clear that she is to be an extra servant, helping take care of the infant children. Olivia, Granville's daughter from an earlier marriage, befriends Portia, however.
An old enemy of the Granville household, Rufus Decatur, former Earl of Rothbury, has sworn revenge on the family of the man who was responsible for his father's death and disgrace. Olivia is to be kidnapped and used as a bargaining tool. However, a mistake is made and Portia is kidnapped instead. Rufus isn't sure what to do with her, so he keeps her prisoner.
However, Portia then decides that she wants to train and to join his militia as a soldier - even though she knows that Rufus intends to attack her uncle's household! That part was difficult to swallow; war is a serious business, and even if Portia isn't particularly loyal to either King or Parliament, the thought of striking against her uncle's home, and especially her cousin, should surely not have come so easily to her.
Like another reviewer, I wasn't convinced by the 'falling in love' part of the book, and the resolution in particular was unconvincing.

I'm hooked!

This book is a great read, with well-developed and lovable characters and a pretty good plot. I love the heroine's spunk, independence, and determination, and I will most definitely buy the next two books of the trilogy when they come out. I also like the settings--a drafty castle, a frozen moat, a freezing countryside, a secluded criminal camp, a cozy cottage. I also liked that the heroine is not absolutely perfect in looks; she is realistic, like the rest of us, and her beauty comes from her heart and personality. The sexual tension is believable every step of the way, and the plot never slows down. My favorite scene is the practical jokes that Portia and Olivia play at one point.

In fact I rather despise claims to objectivity in philosophy the point of view is the thing. I should have liked to call it A Lyrical Philosophy, using the word lyri cal in the sense of being a highly personal and individual oudook. But that would be too beautiful a name and I must forego it, for fear of aiming too high and leading the reader to expect too much, and because the main ingredient of my thought is matter-of-fact prose, a level easier to maintain because more natural. Very much con tented am I to lie low, to cling to the soil, to be of kin to the sod. My soul squirms comfortably in the soil and sand and is happy. Sometimes when one is drunk with this earth, ones spirit seems so light that he thinks he is in heaven. But actually he seldom rises six feet above the ground. I should have liked also to write the entire book in the form of a dialogue like Platos. It is such a convenient form for personal, inadvertent disclosures, for bringing in the significant trivialities of our daily life, above all for idle rambling about the pastures of sweet, silent thought. But somehow I have not done so. I do not know why. A fear, perhaps, that this form of literature being so little in vogue today, no one probably would read it, and a writer after all wants to be read And when I say dialogue, I do not mean answers and questions like newspaper interviews, or those leaders chopped up into short paragraphs I mean really good, long, leisurely dis courses extending several pages at a stretch, with many detours, and coming back to the original point of discussion by a short cut at the most unexpected spot, like a man returning home by climbing over hedge, to the surprise of his walking companion. Oh, how I love to reach home by climbing over the back fence, and to travel on bypaths At least my companion will grant that I am familiar with the way home and with the surrounding countryside . , . But I dare not. I am not original. The ideas expressed here have been thought and expressed by many thinkers of the East and West over and over again those I borrow from the East are hackneyed truths there They are, nevertheless, my ideas they have become a part of my being. If they have taken root in my being, it is because they express something original in me, and when I first encountered them, my heart gave an instinctive assent. I like them as ideas and not because the person who expressed them is of any account. In fact, I have traveled the bypaths in my reading as well as in my writing. Many of the authors quoted are names obscure and may baffle a Chinese professor of literature. If some happen to be well known, I accept their ideas only as they compel my intuitive ap proval and not because the authors are well-known. It is my habit to buy cheap editions of old, obscure books and see what I can dis cover there. If the professors of literature knew the sources of my ideas, they would be astounded at the Philistine. But there is a greater pleasure in picking up a small pearl in an ash-can than in looking at a large one in a jewelers window, I am not deep and not well-read. If one is too well-read, then one does not know right is right and wrong is wrong. I have not read Locke or Hume or Berkeley, and have not taken a college course in philosophy. Technically speaking, my method and my training are all wrong, because I do not read philosophy, but only read life at first hand. That is an unconventional way of studying philosophy the incorrect way...

Taking walks, drinking tea, long talks with friends are all important to Lin, whose stories and retellings of Taoist classics meander away from his points, find new ones, and remind us to enjoy the life that's all around us without needless worry.

Lin's prose is gentle, like the conversation of a favorite lazy uncle who is more at home sipping lemonade on the back porch than gulping lattes between meetings. The sincerity of his humility is surprising to a reader used to postmodern writers who seem to pride themselves on their self-abasement. Though Lin deliberately avoided fame and notoriety, correctly observing that it only leads to troubles, one can only hope that his wisdom, timelier than ever, finds a wider audience among today's too-busy-to-breathe global culture. His philosophy, more practical and enjoyable than the usual Western writings on the subject, reminds us all of the vital importance of simply living. --Rob Lightner

Beautiful ,wonderful, thought provoking book. Lin Yutang is masterful, witty, and simply a pleasure to read. Many of his insights about America in the 1930s still ring very true today.
