Another Hit!

I have a 20 month old who absolutley loves this book! She discoved the light switches some time ago and so she loves to see the effects in the book that back up her experiences! Of course, at her age we are using the book as a tool to increase her language by naming objects and colors. I also only ask her to find Blue hiding in the dark and not the missing toy as asked for in the narrative. This is what I love about these books - they capture her attention immediately with the characters and colors and they can "grow" with her. As she develops more sophisticated problem solving skills I can then start asking her to find the missing toy. If your child likes brightly colored pictures or the show itself, then put this on your book-buying list!

Good little book!

We own a few of these Blue's Clues books and my toddler loves them! He has one that's been worn ragged because it went everywhere with him and took a lot of abuse, that considered they hold up very well! Not a great read with all the wonderful children's books out there but my son just loves them and they're sturdy! I do recommend!

Good point, bad points

Maybe my son is just too young to understand the book, but the only thing he likes about the book is that when he touches the light switch the pages turn. As for naming the toys and noticing where they are, he has no interest. Of course, he is only 18 months old. I think that part of the problem is that every page looks alike, with only one toy out of place. The changes are not really obvious, so to him the book is boring. Blue is his favorite character and I am sure he will continue to look at the book. It's just not one of his favorites.

Awesome book!

I learned complex variable theory on my own from this book and it was a very fun process. The treatment proceeds similar to a normal calculus textbook. Clear examples, and interesting problems are also included. In fact, this book has more info here than most others. At 600+ pp. it's a solid reference.
Also, this is the only such book I've seen with exercise answers included in the back. No other complex variable book out there (that i've seen) does this for some reason.
I highly recommend this title.

wonderful for self study !!

This book is outstanding for self-study. The discussions are very readable and the problems do a good job of re-enforcing the discussion at hand. The book covers a wide range of topics and spends ample time on each individual subject - so you really get your money's worth. I have made multiple self-study attempts at complex variables using a wide variety of books both old and new and can say that this is the best I've seen. As a bonus Dr. Wunsch takes you on various short historical and mathematical side trips (both in the body of the text and in the problems) which makes the book come alive. I recommend this book - it should set the standard for the definitive undergrad complex variables text book if it hasn't already.

A Great Book

My comments here are for the second edition of this book as I do not have the third edition. This is one of the most elegant books on the subject of complex variables. The author uses very clear language to explain complicated topics such as contour integration and conformal mapping. It contains both elementary and advanced topics. This book has several interesting properties: First, It is virtually void of errors. Second, there are a lot of examples worked out in detail. Most of these examples are from physics or engineering. Third, the book contains an excellent collection of homework problems with varying degree of difficulty and the author actually leads you to the solution step by step. This is a great book for self study or any introductory undergraduate course on the subject

About the Author

Dr. Adrian Kaehler is a senior scientist at Applied Minds Corporation. His current research includes topics in machine learning, statistical modeling, computer vision and robotics. Adrian received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Columbia university in 1998. Adrian has since held positions at Intel Corporation and the Stanford University AI Lab, and was a member of the winning Stanley race team in the DARPA Grand Challenge. He has a variety of published papers and patents in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, and robotics.

Dr. Gary Rost Bradski is a consulting professor in the CS department at Stanford University AI Lab where he mentors robotics, machine learning and computer vision research. He is also Senior Scientist at Willow Garage http://www.willowgarage.com, a recently founded robotics research institute/incubator. He has a BS degree in EECS from U.C. Berkeley and a PhD from Boston University. He has 20 years of industrial experience applying machine learning and computer vision spanning option trading operations at First Union National Bank, to computer vision at Intel Research to machine learning in Intel Manufacturing and several startup companies in between. Gary started the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencvlibrary/ ), the statistical Machine Learning Library (MLL comes with OpenCV), and the Probabilistic Network Library (PNL). OpenCV is used around the world in research, government and commercially. The vision libraries helped develop a notable part of the commercial Intel performance primitives library (IPP http://tinyurl.com/36ua5s). Gary also organized the vision team for Stanley, the Stanford robot that won the DARPA Grand Challenge autonomous race across the desert for a $2M team prize and helped found the Stanford AI Robotics project at Stanford http://www.cs.stanford.edu/group/stair/ working with Professor Andrew Ng. Gary has over 50 publications and 13 issued patents with 18 pending. He lives in Palo Alto with his wife and 3 daughters and bikes road or mountains as much as he can.

A real classic for realists

This the most comprehensive book on the famed reilly method. Frank.J.Reilly is the famous illustrator, whose course was based mostly on munsell's color theory. The reilly method itself looks very mechanical, the method doesnt leave anything in the grey, and uses terms like passion for art, feeling for color, movement etc. it tries to explain properly in a scene, under the lighting condition what exactly will be the chroma, value and color. IMO, probably that is all that can be taught as far as realistic painting is concerned. a serious student should learn these things before learning the philosophy behind the picture making. May be the teaching itself is very dogmatic and sets mechanical standards, but a serious learner should atleast have an inkling of these things before he can transgress these things in full awareness.
But for all the praise, be forewared about the books format: It almost looks like a project report rather than an art instruction book. it has only a few color plates that describe munsell charts. thats all.
In my opinion, this should rank with the classics like Richard schmid's Alla prima book.

A great book, but buyer beware and all that.

This book does assume a great deal of familiarity with the Reilly Technique, but was a fabulous find. My copy came with a long handwritten letter by the author, and included some copies of corrections to the text. The corrections included some mistakes on the math for the values of certain lighting schemes, but could be spotted or already corrected in your volume. Since he teaches you the process by which he derives the numbers, you have the means to check for yourself.

Apollo Dorian also taught mechanical drawing, and incorporates his teachings into supplemental chapters, but you can peruse that later. The real find of this is how exhaustive he is on detailing the shifts of lighting, transparency and even landscape painting, which was something Faragasso's book on painting did not include if I can remember correctly.

If I could recommend this book with another, for a less advanced student, it would be with Angelo John Grado's "Mastering the Craft of Painting"--since his book replicates a good deal of the studio experience that I went through at the Art Student's League. Also, a good deal of this information can be found online with the right searches.

A back stage glimpse at rock & roll life in the 70's.

Bob Greene's open-eyed account of the excesses of life as a temporary member of the Alice Cooper road show in 1973-74. Not only do we see the stresses taking their toll on a band just passing their peak, but we also get a fairly nostalgic look at Nixon-era America. Not as much a "Fan" book as it is a nice study of the commercialism and marketing techniques that used to stir teen appeal and parental angst.

Columnist Bob Greene goes on the Alice Cooper band's Muscle of Love Christmas Tour in 1973. He is also present for the recording of the Muscle of Love album. He plays the part of Santa Claus in the show and is beaten up by the band at the end of the show each night. Most of the people on the tour know that Greene will be writing about the tour but I don't think anybody quite knew how deeply Greene was going to analyze what he saw and heard. Alice was getting tired of being Alice. He had his eyes set on a Hollywood film career and would eventually move to Beverly Hills right next door to Groucho Marx. Golf, beer and TV were his addictions. Shep Gordon (manager)and Alice began making all the decisons while the band was reduced to back up musicians but even then their power was limited. Glen Buxton (guitar) had become dysfunctional and didn't even play on the Muscle of Love album although his pictures were on the album. On tour his amp was often turned down except during 18 and School's Out but even then sometimes he flaked. He was drunk and belligerent at group interviews and Alice felt uncomfortable practicing with Glen hence their live harmonies were very sloppy because they didn't practice enough. Guitarist Mike Bruce suggested to Shep that they permanently replace Glen with Mick Mashbir the backup guitar player on stage and on the albums but Shep said no. This made functioning as a group very difficult. The band talked about each other behind each others backs and Bob Green printed these comments. Everyone was taking him into their confidence. He never took notes or had a tape recorder so everyone was speaking their mind. Alice was a raging alchoholic at this time. He threw up blood every morning. In any other line of work he would be dysfunctional and be fired but fortunately or unfortunately the demented character he developed allowed him to be totally drunk on stage and get away with it. He was a physical wreck but he did this all to himself. Mike, Neal and Dennis were on all the same tours and were perfectly healthy. You can't blame the work load. The alcoholism surely tainted his view of his situation making him depressed and perhaps colored his view of his fellow band mates.
Eventually Alice goes solo and tries to make it in Hollywood but never plays anything more than a warlock or psychotic homeless person. He does manage to change his public image so most feel he was just acting but loses much ground in the Rock n' Roll world. Welcome to my NIghtmare was fairly big but I felt rode the wave the band had already created. His stock has since plummeted and he is only a small act today playing state fairs and casino parking lots while reunited bands like Aerosmith, Kiss and Fleetwood Mac play arenas and stadiums like the Alice Cooper band used to do. Alice finally gives up dreams of making it in Hollywood and tries hard to get his audience back. He can still sing but the using of close to a hundred different musicians over the past 20 or so years has made his sound...we'll... I've felt he has never matched the power of the original band although he has had some moments.
I read this book when I was 15 when it first came out and it was hard for me to see. My boyish hero bubble burst. I never did get to see these guys live. I saw the solo Alice and it just wasn't the same.
If you can find this book it is a fascinating read. Many insights into human behavior. I felt Green was objective. Drummer Neal Smith hates Bob Green to this day feeling this book destroyed the band. Even Bassist Dennis Dunaway feels thing were taken out of context. Alice has the name legally now even though it was originally the name of the band. He and Shep can now run the show without the band raising objections.

Billiion Dollar Alice

I read this book in high school. I was lucky enough to see Alice 3 times in the seventies.

The book didn't burst my bubble, but it did make me feel very sorry for Alice. He was in trouble and he didn't have a clue.

Later when he quit drinking I was afraid that he wouldn't be as good, but I was relieved when he jumped out of a trash can on stage and sang "Under My Wheels".

Anyway, the book is great and Bob Greeene gives you a rare look at the world of rock 'n roll long beore "Almost Famous" which clearly provides a very cleaned-up view of that world.

All Alice fans will love it.....we're truly not worthy.
