The annoying Nana Mama still crops up way too often

CROSS THE LINE is James Patterson’s 24th book in the Alex Cross series. I’ve never been a big fan of the series, but I give this one some high marks. Believe this book was actually written by Patterson without the help of his usual surrogate writers. For the most part the story is an action thriller and the Cross family appearances are kept to a minimum (thank goodness). The annoying Nana Mama still crops up way too often. The story starts with a wave of senseless killings across Washington DC and its suburbs. Only after the District Chief of Detectives and his Slovakia girlfriend are gunned down in cold blood on a busy public walkway does it grab the attention of Washington politicos. They demand swift action. Dr. Cross is asked to take the job as Chief of Detectives but turns it down. His wife, Bree Stone, accepts the position. This makes for interesting team and family dynamics as they pursue bad guys across the District. Interest grows as the story wades through several subplots. One involves a group of hardcore ex-military vigilantes who take the law into their own hands, another trudges into the manufacture and distribution of dangerous narcotics, and yet another deals with the trafficking and servitude of young European women at an exclusive Washington area resort. Cross and Stone ferret out the criminal activity with tact and practiced protocols. There is plenty of action with good fight scenes and shootouts. Although not a Cross fan, I must say the novel is engaging and held my interest. I give the story 4-stars.

I am really confused!!

I am giving this Alex Cross book for one reason only!! Does James Patterson think that the majority of his readers are stupid? In May, I ordered and read Cross Kill, a Bookshots story about Alex Cross and his "dead" nemesis, Gary Soneji. I apologize to anyone who has not read it but I have to mention the end of the Bookshot in order for you to understand my confusion. At the end of Cross Kill, John Sampson has been severely injured by bullets and is in critical condition, not knowing whether he will live. Alex Cross has been arrested for murder and is taken into custody. Now one would think that at the beginning of Cross the Line, the author would have brought closure to the serious situations that Sampson and Cross are in. But no. The book begins and there is no mention of how Sampson recovered or how Cross was exonerated. I find this totally ridiculous. If someone has an explanation that I am not aware of, I would appreciate a response. Other than that huge mistake, the book is rather good.

Great Adventure But With Great Tortuosity

First, I wasn't overly fond of the book description given on Amazon. For example, it says: "What should be a time for [Bree] to rely on Alex for support and cooperation is instead a moment of crisis in their marriage as well as their city when their investigative instincts clash and their relationship reaches a breaking point." Yet at no point is Alex's relation with Bree endangered; rather, they grow closer. And there are the usual heartwarming asides about Nana Mama and Alex's children Damon, Jannie, and Ali.

But, secondly, this book is very complicated, as some of Patterson's are. There are three principal storylines: unauthorized mercenaries attacking cartels engaged in drug and human trafficking; some seemingly road-rage murders; and a drive-by shooting taking out a chief of detectives, his CI, and a person they try to frame. Somewhat frustratingly, who's doing what baffles Alex, Sampson, Bree, and their FBI associates for most of the book.

However there are furious engagements throughout, and the book is a great action-packed adventure for those committed to "hang in there" and, as closely as possible, follow the many twists and turns, while forgetting about those that are just too puzzling.

A cut above the rest!

Nitesh is one of my favorite technical authors and I'm extremely pleased that "Abusing the Internet of Things" is finally here. I can positively say that this is a must-have, must-read book for professionals trying to understand / investigate core security and privacy issues affecting consumer grade IOT products.

I had the chance to read the book cover to cover prior to the final release and would like to say that the technical contents in this book is fantastic. I would like to highlight few of the concepts that Nitesh helped me understand:

a) The feasibility and impact of cross device attacks in this age of "digitally syncing" all our devices
b) Secure prototyping of IOT products using easily available DIY HW/SW kits
c) Fundamental security issues affecting specific implementations of popular IOT protocols (Z-Wave and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy))
d) How to systematically dissect any given IOT product to identify "hard to find" HW/SW attack surfaces

The examples in this book are elegant and very well sequenced. I especially liked the detailed deconstruction of specific attacks with code examples, HTTP requests and response snippets and relevant screenshots. That being said, this book is an easy read and like his previous books, the topics flow smoothly. If you are a builder or breaker of IOT products or just a curious security researcher, don't hesitate, just buy this book. It serves as a solid primer to IOT security.

Great resource on IoT security

This is a great resource to understand the current IoT security landscape, along with examples and hacks. All topics are well explained with well coordinated flow of chapters. It would have been better if the book could also cover security aspects from IoT cloud providers and best practices around it. Best resource available so far on this subject. Highly recommend.

The current state of security is not good

As we continue to plow down the road of adopting technology that directly places our lives and safety at risk it is essential to have contrarians with foresight that point out the failings of such technology. This book doesn't pretend to be a framework for securing IOT. It provides examples of vulnerability with detailed analysis of what went wrong. These unfortunately reflect the current state of security with regards to IOT. I hope this book influences others not only to not repeat these specific flaws but to construct meaningful frameworks for IOT security.

easy to understand professor

Dr. Goel is a very talented engineer and professor and knows a lot about VLSI interconnections. He is the best teacher that I've ever had in college or earlier and has taught me a lot about VLSI design and the physics of semiconductors.

Collectively, these groups were responsible for the UI, layout, meta-data (editorial and visual assets) and presentation of the Netflix service internationally across all platforms. Rochelle has over 14 years of experience working on consumer facing products. @rochelleking

Dr Elizabeth Churchill is a Director of User Experience at Google. Her work focuses on the connected ecosystems of the Social Web and Internet of Things.

For 2 decades, Elizabeth has been a research leader at well-known corporate R&D organizations including Fuji Xerox’s research lab in Silicon Valley (FXPAL), the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), eBay Research Labs in San Jose, and Yahoo! in Santa Clara, California.

Elizabeth is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and Speaker. She is also a member of the ACM's SIGCHI Academy, in recognition of her contributions to the field of Human Computer Interaction. Elizabeth has contributed groundbreaking research in a number of areas, publishing over 100 peer reviewed articles, co-editing 5 books in HCI related fields, contributing as a regular columnist for the Association of Computing Machinery's (ACM) interactions magazine since 2008, and publishing an academic textbook, Foundations for Designing User Centered Systems. Her upcoming book, Designing with Data, will be published in 2016. She has also launched successful products, and has more than 50 patents granted or pending.

Tiepoes galoore

I purchased the six volumes of this set for my Kindle even though I have the work in hardback. Winnie is quite a stout fellow even when he's only print on paper, most volumes running around 800 pages. Kindle seemed a great way to make him portable instead of portly. I am on my fourth reading of the collection with one of those being this digital version. The works themselves are a unique insight to WWII at the highest level and I recommend them to anyone with an interest in this subject. My negative review is NOT about the writing or the subject matter. I am appalled at the number of typographical errors in the Kindle versions. In the Third volume there is literally at least one on every page of the first half of the book. Throughout the volumes the last name of the French Admiral Darlan is misspelled. Place names, unit designations, conjunctions, prepositions, nouns and verbs are butchered throughout the works. In addition the maps displayed very poorly on my Kindle. It is a shame that these books have been so shabbily converted to digital format. I repeat these errors are rife throughout all six volumes. If I were unfamiliar with the work there are passages that would be meaningless because of the errors. Don't waste your money on the Kindle version.

Masterul use of english language to tell a great story

As with virtually everything he did in life, Winston Churchill wrote his six volume history of the Second World War with many goals: As the Prime Minister of Britain (and--equally importantly--a member of the "right" class), Churchill had access to volumes of original documents. As the Prime Minister during the War, he was in a unique position to understand the relationship of those documents to real events. As a central actor, he had a huge incentive to prepare the first draft of history...to place himself in the best possible light. As a conservative politician out of power when he wrote, he sought to warn the world of the looming communist menace. Finally, as a long time practitioner of written English, he had an unparalleled command of the language. In this volume, Churchill successfully blends together all of these personas to create an absolutely riveting history of the prelude to the Second World War--from the close of World War One to the invasion of Belgium.
Churchill's mastery of English is reason enough to read this book. For example, in describing the British government's constant debates over what to do about German rearmament, Churchill says the British were "frothing pious platitudes while foeman forge their arms". Very seldom do I have to turn to a dictionary while reading, but Churchill sent me there regularly.
But do not think that this is just a book to be read to enjoy his use of language. His detailed account of how we got into the Second World War, and how we might have avoided it, is incisive and persuasively argued. And always watch for the subtext--his warning that the appeasement on Germany was then (in the 1950's) being repeated in the appeasement of the Soviet Union.
Churchill's weakness flows directly from his strength. As a prime actor, he saw (and describes) the war entirely from the "balance of power", or large political perspective. The plight of the Jews in Germany is barely mentioned. He pays virtually no attention to the internal politics of the U.S.--which ultimately proved decisive in the war. And he virtually ignores the growing war in the far east.
With that limitation in mind, this is a book everyone interested in understanding the Second World War--and everyone who enjoys the creative use of the English language--should read.

A classic, but the Kindle edition is lacking

Sadly, the Kindle Edition of this work fails to do it justice. Churchill has dotted this text with numerous charts and tables illustrating the progress of the war, and every single one of them is completely illegible. The Kindle edition has included them at a shamefully useless resolution, and so I must suggest that any interested reader buy a different edition. I am very disappointed in this purchase.

Good student text

The authors give a nice presentation of theory involved in recrystallization, distillation, chromatography, and extraction. The writing style is academic, but friendly enough to keep you interested. I found it great to read before doing the scheduled experiments in O-Chem lab. However, this is a very "student"-ish text and I seriously doubt professionals would find it useful, unless you're looking for a refresher course in the basic techniques. The labs I took had a significant amount of NMR involved; not much discussion in this text about that. The problems provided are usually good, but there are no answers given. I'd also recommend "Principles and Techniques in an Integrated Chem Laboratory" by Aikens, Bailey, et al.

Dare I say the lab bible?

So far so good. It really breaks down the labs well. I have been out of a chem lab for many years and now jumping back into Orgo (I'm not crazy I swear), this really helps me understand what's going on. It gives pointers and trouble shooting tips. It really is a must have for the techniques in lab. I haven't had to Google/YouTube anything after reading this book for techniques. That in itself is why the star rating.

One con-- there are end of section questions but no answers... they certainly know how to leave a girl hangin'...

About the Author
Barbara Conable is an Alexander teacher of 23 years experience and a teaching member of the North American Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique and Alexander Technique International. She has taught at the Ohio State University and the Cincinnati Conservatory and is now President of Andover Educators. She is an active poet and the author and editor of several books about the Alexander Technique.

No Filling in This Sandwich

I'm a serious amateur musician (singer), so I know that understanding the body and learning how to use it properly is crucial to making good music. I thought this book would teach me how to better use my body through consideration of its various parts and relationships. I was wrong. Too many of the one-page sections start and end with simplistic lead-ins and ferverinos like these: "You can learn to have a pressure-free front" or "You can learn to organize your torso around your core" and end with "You have a pressure-free front? Gloat! and "If you already, just naturally, organize around your core, huzza!" In between these statements are anatomical diagrams but nothing that tells the reader/student HOW to develop a pressure-free front or to organize the torso around the core. And so on. From the reviews this book apparently satisfies the needs of some, and that's great. But if you're a serious musician looking not only to understand the way the body should work but also tips, advice, or exercises about HOW to use your body, you'll need to look elsewhere. I am.

An excellent introduction to body mapping

Unlike many of the other reviewers, I have found this book to be an excellent introduction to body mapping and the Alexander Technique. I think the operative word is "introduction." This should not be thought of as an in-depth study of body mapping; for that, one should refer to Conable's book "How to use the Alexander technique." As both a professional singer and a voice instructor, I have found this simple book to be very useful. It is a helpful tool to introduce students to the very concept of body mapping (something that most people know nothing about...by the way, it's the study of the proper way to hold one's self and use one's body based on an accurate concept of one's physiology). It is also a helpful tool for someone who is familiar with body mapping to check yourself. If you want an in-depth study, this is not the book to use, but it is excellent to use in conjunction with other texts, especially a simple anatomy book. And, as to the cartoon-like drawings, they make it simple, and simple is a good way to start!
