About the Author

A Swiss native born in 1946, Peter Zweifel is a Professor of Economics at the University of Zurich at the Socioeconomic Institute. Together with Friedrich Breyer and Matthias Kifmann, he is the author of “Health Economics” (2nd. ed., Springer, 2009); other texts (“An Economic Model of Physician Behavior”, “Insurance Economics”, “International Economics”, “Energy Economics”) are available in German only. His work has been published by the Am. Ec. Rev., Antitrust Bull., Eur. Econ. Rev., Health Econ. , �J. Health Ec., J. Risk & Ins., J. Risk & Unc., Public Choice, among others. Together with Mark Pauly� of the University of Pennsylvania, he is the founding editor of the International Journal of Health Finance and Economics (Kluwer). From 1996 to 2005, he has also served as a member of the Competition Commission, the Swiss antitrust authority.

Roland Eisen�born 1941 in Stuttgart (Germany), studied Economics in particular at the LMU in Munich, got his Dr. degree there in 1971 with a thesis about "Economic Growth and Technical Progress", wrote his second thesis about "Insurance Equilibrium" in 1977 (published 1979). He served for 13 years as a research assistant at the Institut of Insurance Economics at Munich's LMU. After appointments at the University

of�Bamberg and at the Technical University Munich-Weihenstephan he was appointed�as full professor at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main.His research fields are insurance economics, labour economics, economics of social policy, health economics (in particular long term care), as well as macroeconomics.

I am really glad that I have read this book and have referenced it in my thesis.The book gave me a very detailed view of the insurance industry from an economics perspective. I had to read it carefully to understand the economics theory behind it and have used the references used by the author to get more information. One thing to note is that I found some spelling mistakes in the book.

The 1850 edition

Important revision by Wordsworth in later life of his 1805 blank verse autobiography. A comparison of both editions reveals a maturity from Romanticism to Victorian moralism. Anyone interested in the growth of English poetic form should be captivated by this thrilling document.

Beware - 1850 Edition, not 1805

I'm a grad student, and I purchased this due to its linked paperback 1805 edition. This kindle version, however, is the 1850 edition, not the 1805.

The text of the 1805 has so much more life to it than the over-worked posthumous edition. My only grumble is that the supporting commentary is so moth-eaten. Won't the publishers offer an updated scholarly context for the benefit of readers?

Just in time for Halloween, Hot and Haunted is full of sexy and scary delights. Spooky and a tad creepy, while also managing to rev up your libido, this anthology was such a wonderful surprise! If there is such a thing as erotica-horror, then these three tales are excellent examples of it. And while I may have picked this one up because of Miz Hart's name on the cover--I'm happy to have found two new author's I want to read more from!

+ Nothing Else Matters by Megan Hart - Rating: A

The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world teeming with zombies, where every man and woman is simply fighting to survive. One such survivor is Lira, our heroine. Immune to the spores that change people from human to one of the Resurrected, Lira is in charge of making runs to gather up food and supplies for her small group. A job that definitely takes its toll on her... and makes her crave skin to skin action with her lover/boyfriend, Anthony, whenever she makes it back alive. Which is never a guarantee, so those two always make the most of their time together.

Nothing Else Matters has a vivid end-of-the-world setting, a heroine who is strong and adaptable, a hero who is understanding and isn't afraid to say 'I love you', zombies, sex, sex, and more sex. It quickly engages you and draws you in. It will turn you on and, well, freak you out as well. If I was a nail biter, a few scenes would've had me chewing on them pretty darn good. Miz Hart's story packs quite the compact punch.

+ Pick Me Up by Lauren Hawkeye - Rating: B

Holly is a woman scorned, out for some revenge. Standing in the middle of the road in a white dress while it pours down rain, she waits for some unsuspecting man to rescue her. That man ends up being Brody, a hot geek that's totally unprepared for the passenger he picks up. After getting his car stuck in a ditch, Holly and Brody get to really know each other while they wait for a tow.

Pick Me Up puts a new spin on hitchhiking, that's for sure. And even though it isn't so much a 'feel good' story, it was still very steamy and titillating. My only issue was Holly, as she isn't a terribly likeable heroine. She says and does some things that made me feel sorry for Brody. I'm also not 100% sure about the ending (which I believe was deliberate)... it kind of ends on a creepy note! Still, those two could give Jack and Rose (Titanic) a run for their money on steaming up car windows. Whew!
*The only non-paranormal story in this antho.

+ Little Red's Big Bad by Saranna DeWylde - Rating: A

Miranda, a U.S. Marshal, is being taunted by a serial killer. But not just any serial killer--one that believes he's a werewolf. Tasked with hunting him down, Miranda is joined in the hunt by Aden, an agent with the FBI. When they become trapped in a cabin, surrounded by giant snow drifts with no way out, Miranda and Aden put the case on the back burner and give in to their burning lust.

Little Red's Big Bad was full of awesome drama and absorbs you into the chase immediately. The chemistry between Miranda and Aden is immediate too. It's there, quietly simmering, until it finally boils over. So hot. I also really enjoyed how the psychological condition of lycanthropy played a big part. Is there or isn't there actual werewolves? Smart twist on it. And the ending, well, I'll admit I actually aww'd out loud. I plan to check out Miz DeWylde's PNR series, 10 Days, as soon as possible!

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS by Megan Hart

In the first book of the "Hot and Haunted" anthology, we visit with Lira and Anthony after the world has been attacked and virus has been spread killing humans only to resurrect them to spread the virus even more. Kira, Anthony and a few other humans have taken refuge in a Synagogue and Kira is their only salvation. The only one who has come in contact with the virus and has survived. That is, until she meets Mac, a soldier who has defected and is trying to warn any humans he can that the military has decided to wipe out everyone in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading.

I love anthologies. The stories are short and to the point. Ms. Hart had this storyline moving constantly. It was quick, witty and packed with some really hot sex. It was also a love story between Kira and Anthony ... a story about trust and love. The only way Kira can get the sight and sounds of the Resurrected from her mind is with sex. Sex with Anthony and then sex with Mac after he rescued her. Something they both needed. When Mac shows up at the Synagogue, Anthony knows but he loves Kira enough to understand why and move forward and trusting Mac to get them all to safety.

PICK ME UP by Lauren Hawkeye

Well, I was a little confused with this story in "Hot and Haunted". That is, until the end. Ms. Hawkeye kept you on your toes throughout this little ditty. Brody finds Holly stranded during a torrential rain storm, almost hitting her with his car. But, was she really stranded, what is her end-game? Holly goes from hot to cold, sexy to embarrassed, sane then insane throughout the story. Brody is an optometrist, a little geeky and falling for the act that Holly is putting on.

See, Holly's fiancee cheated on her (I think) so she is out looking to get her revenge on him with a stranger. Standing in the middle of the road with a white dress on, she plans on stopping the next vehicle that comes by - male or female - it didn't matter to her. Brody swerves to miss hitting her and ends up in a ditch. Taking Holly into the car starts her plan and her seduction. Everything ends with them rolling around in the mud, with Brody giving orders and Holly begging for more. But, was Brody set up, is she really who she says she is, is her fiancee really the one in the pick-up truck?

Yes, this story is a real mind-f***! I'm still not sure what Holly was up to or if the stories she told Brody were real or not. The writing was clever and fast-paced and really had you thinking throughout. Is there an HEA, well probably not for Brody!

LITTLE RED'S BIG BAD by Saranna DeWylde

Yum, werewolves! Hot werewolves, sexy werewolves, bad werewolves. Gotta love em!

In the final story in "Hot and Haunted" we get to meet red-headed U.S. Marshal Miranda Garrick who has been called in to track escaped serial killer Dean Harvey Webster. Enter FBI Special Agent Aden Brewster. Miranda works alone but really has no choice but to allow Aden to help in the investigation. What happens in the snow-bound cabin is wild, fun and oh, so very, very hot.

Aden has leads on Dean that can't be ignored and leads the two of them to the cabin in Alexandria, MN. Aden is hinting at Dean being a werewolf - preparing her for what is to come. She's not convinced but becomes a little concerned when all the wolves start howling as they are making their way to the cabin in the whiteout. After a wonderful night in front of the fire, with Aden showing Miranda that "skin to skin is the best way to keep warm", all hell breaks lose. Dean has found them only after Miranda makes a big mistake in judgment. What happens is fast, furious and eye-opening to Miranda. But, what she still does not know is that she has been bitten 3 times.

I loved "Little Red's Big Bad". It was witty, playful and fun. Ms. DeWylde kept the action moving and the sex hot and heavy making this quick, erotic read a real joy!

Sexy, Haunting Stories to Steam You Up!

Three sexy, creepy stories to steam you up!

Nothing Else Matters, by Megan Hart, is the story of Lira, a survivor of the apocalypse. The world has gone to hell and the only way Lira knows to escape the terror is through sex. Anthony, a fellow survivor, is the man she turns to when she needs to turn her brain off and her body on. The author did a fantastic job of writing very steamy and easy-to-visualize scenes. This story definitely makes me want to read more from Hart.

Pick Me Up, by Lauren Hawkeye, was the story I was most excited to read. I am a huge fan of her book, My Wicked Gladiators, so my hopes were high. I did like this, but I spent the first chapter or so completely confused as to what was going on. Regardless of what the situation was, the sex was great, as I've come to expect from the author. Once the big shocker was dropped, the twist that made Pick Me Up so creepy, I was hooked. To read a story with alternating dread and being turned on was an interesting experience.

Little Red's Big Bad was such a mind trip. It started out like a freaking scene from The Silence of the Lambs and I did NOT think I was going to enjoy it at all. But then the focus switched to Miranda and Aden, two Federal Agents trying to capture a serial killer. The scenes between these two were fantastic. Miranda was basically panting after Aden from the moment they meet, not even able to keep her hands off herself while thinking of him. OH, and I learned about an iPhone app that I never even dreamed existed! As you might have guessed, there were elements to Little Red Riding Hood, and I loved it! So even though Little Red's Big Bad started out iffy for me, the awesome sexual encounters and the surprise ending made me love it.

Hot and Haunted is three short, sexy stories that will leave you surprised and breathless.

In 1974 Chappell and wife Kate founded Tom's of Maine, a company that makes products using only natural ingredients. By 1981 this company, started with a $5000 loan, was registering $1.5 million in sales. Despite this success, Chappell was unhappy; he felt disconnected from the company. He enrolled in divinity school, where he decided to re-create his company in a way that would encourage respect for the individual, the community, and the environment. This is the story of that transformation. Many of the ideas presented here, like starting a newsletter or creating small work groups, have been prevalent in management literature for some time, and few companies have the conditions needed to make their success possible. While Tom's of Maine consumers might enjoy reading this account, and others might find it inspirational, only the CEO of a small company could use it to follow in Chappell's footsteps.

Provides foundation to business ethics

The Soul of a Business, though lesser known than many of the myriad of business advice books, does a better job than any other in giving a foundation from which to work.
The business guru often spends an entire book telling us how to treat others. Chappell tells us what basic principles he found that led him to this position of responsible commerce.
Shelves are full of books offering cliches and platitudes on why why ethical behavior leads to a better company and eventually more profits. However, Chappell's book goes back to the root question - why should we as individuals or companies seek one kind of relationship over another? In other words, what should guide us in how we treat each other?
For a book that delivers far beyond simple diagrams and behavior modification tricks, a book that provides the philosophical foundations of Buber and Edwards to guide us in how we should interact with our employees, customers and community read Chappell's book. I ended up owning both paperback and audio tape.

A wake up call for traditional, one-dimensional managers.

For those of us who have had difficulty reconciling our personal desires to make a difference with our career demands to turn a profit, this book connects. It's a study in managing value complexity and speaks well to the enormous rewards of striving for a goal much higher than improving ROE. Not all of us can take the same route as does Tom Chappell, but, if we're to be truly fulfilled by our business lives, we must find our own way to his destination.

Don't let a business take itself over

This was a wonderful book to read. After reading it I felt as though I probably know its author pretty good. Not as a friend or someone I'd necessarily like to be friends with, but he seems to be very open about his past, his present, and his beliefs. I am sure that what he discloses in this book will help any wanta-be entrepreneur or small to medium sized business owner rethink whether he or she is leading his or her company in the right direction. I highly recommend that entrepreneurs give this book a read.

Some of the issues addressed are as follows:

1. Will the mission of the company allow the company's leader to enjoy a reasonably good state of mind or conscience?

2. What does a CEO have to do at work to feel fulfilled?

3. Is the CEO of the company a happy and fulfilled person?

4. Are people who work at the company happy at work?

5. Does the company interface well with the community in which it operates?

6. Does the community appreciate the company?

7. Do people trust one another who work for the company?

8. Does much discrimination exist at the company?

9. Is the company all about profits, or not?

10. Is competition good?

11. Is winning always good?

12. Is there more to life than making a buck?

The above issues are just the first 12 that came to mind while I was writing this review. There were many more, but I'm not going to list them all here. The above issues are representative of the content of the book. Maybe the book provides answers, and maybe it doesn't. But the book is great because it reminds business people who are caught up in the rat race of making a living that there is more to business than just making a buck. What comes to mind is: joy, happiness, success, family, friends, and a legacy. Is the business damaging the world, or helping to make it a better place?

I would have enjoyed the book more if the author had not started off explaining what the book "was not." And I would have had a more positive image of the book if the author had not mentioned that he got a lot of his theory from the Harvard Divinity School. There was no need to bring the Gospels into the "story." There is no question that things that can be learned from studying the Gospels are wonderful, but the same things can be learned from other sources. So why throw a religious slant on the issues? I think the book would have been more forceful if religion had be left out entirely.

I enjoyed hearing about the author's wife, but I would have enjoyed hearing more about her thoughts on helping to run the company she and her husband co-founded. I felt a little cheated not hearing a woman's perspective on some of the issues. After all, the author points out that women should be included in management decisions, and that his wife's in fact were.

Awesome book that is a must read! Worth more than its weight in gold.

I read Currency Wars, another book written by the author, a while ago. Even though I was impressed by the concept the author presented in that book, I was turned off by his writing style. In that book, the author spent chapters and chapters bragging about himself telling us how great and important he was, perhaps to establish credibility. The reader had to sift through the fluff to get to the gems of wisdom. As you probably already know, that book made the author famous and currency wars is now a widely understood and often quoted concept in mainstream media.

This book is very different in that regard. It is concise, to the point, mostly factual and the arguments that the author presents are based on sound economic principles. There is very minimal bragging by the author so hardly any fluff. I was able to finish the book within a weekend reading off an on during the day. I am utterly impressed by the author. He is not only knowledgeable but also a genius who can use his knowledge to visualize the future. His arguments are extremely sound. It is amazing how he explains complex economic concepts in simple language for the regular reader. Most readers will not even realize that he is using Masters or PHD level economic concepts to explain what is happening and what will happen. I have a master's in economics from a top school in the nation so I understand the concepts he is using to arrive at certain conclusions.

Another reason I was impressed by this great man is his acknowledgement that he may be wrong. That is the mark of a wise and experienced person because you really never know what will happen in the future. He presents various scenarios on what will unfold in the future without making predictions with certainty. He only suggests that you put 10% of your investible assets in gold. Why? Because he says that even if he is wrong, you will lose minimal amount of money.

Even though I have more or less come to the same conclusions as the author and believe that what he is saying is probably right, it is possible that the future may unfold differently. Regardless, read this book! It is worth your time and money.

IT was the expression of love, of lust

It's just an old lonely metal. For millennia IT had dominion over the rise and fall of empires, a frequent arbiter between wars' winners and losers. IT was the expression of love, of lust, between lovers, between kings and queens, and is the feared adversary among warriors in conquest.
"Gold is a barbarous relic." "Neanderthal", antediluvian" Gold has no yield..no intrinsic value...not enough gold in the world to support finance...caused the Great Depression.
But wait.
Gold has no maturity risk. Gold has no commodity risk. Gold has no issuer risk. Gold is atomic element number 79 and will not degrade. Gold is physical and not digitally exposed. Gold movements are not subject to government edicts. Gold is a store of value.
In the days of Empire, Rome used mostly gold and silver for money until corruption of the elements became anathema to public acceptance.
In the early twenties the German Weimar Republic ignored gold in its currency expansion as the mark soon became hyperinflated.
In 1931 "The Great Betrayal" caused a wave of panic as the Bank of England defaulted on its obligatory conversion of sterling to gold.
In centuries past China saw the fall of an empire as a copper shortage was reflected in coins with iron substitutes.
The expensive American War of Independence was reflected in gold and silver coins as values declined to zero in just two years because of government currency intervention.
Is gold held by individual citizens at risk of confiscation as happened in 1933 by legislative fiat of the Roosevelt Administration? The author is equivocal on this issue but his words on pages 138 and 139 are worthy of consideration.
In the author's Conclusion he writes "my models on systemic risk in capital markets point toward dire events, including the collapse of the international monetary system..."
Are we to ignore the warnings of one who is an advisor on international economics to the Department of Defense and the U.S. intelligence community?

For those of you not paying attention to macro economics you might want to START NOW! Every financial guru is predicting another major Depression that will rival 1929+2008 in the coming 6 months to approx 3 years and you need to learn how to NOT lose half of everything you've worked for like I did in 2008 thanks to crooked "Wall Streeters". I learned more from reading this book and Jim Rickards other two books on Currency wars than in all of business school and as of a result I agree with Mr Rickards predictions and his plan to avoid getting financially destroyed. Selling off all rental houses, sold off all normal stocks, have some cash set aside, some physical silver dollars as "emergency money" when the paper money system fails AND most importantly have invested $80K in Jim Rickards "Gold Speculator" program ($2,000/yr) and made 3 times that in just one week as I bought all of his Penny gold mining stocks just 2 days before "Brexit" was voted "YES" just as Jim Rickards predicted DESPITE what the polls and pundits pronounced. His educational background, life story of 2 financial disasters, and his older age/experience, esp. with working with other countries monetary policies as well as "currency war games" done with our Gov. to protect us against China, Russia, etc gives this man an incredible background in predicting the next Great Depression and what to do to both preserve your wealth and even MAKE money as the world markets are crashing. Good plot; good scene descriptions; great interior dialogue; and hilarious Philly banter

What a fun read!! My brother told me about this book and then mailed it last week with the comment ... "a gripping page-turner that you won't be able to put down".

"Dylan's Monster" turned out to be all that and more. I was delighted to find that that many of the novel's characters have a depth not normally associated with crime novels and scene descriptions that evoke the authentic Philadelphia of my youth. In addition, the clever organization of the novel -- each section is headed by a character's name -- propels the narrative and plot forward while allowing digressions to describe some very amusing fraud schemes that Faustman no doubt experienced while working for the insurance industry.

Most striking for me, however, is Faustman's uniquely 'clean & concise' narrative style. The ultra-lean prose seems to have its own strict grammar rules that enable the author to pack lots of substance into each page. Dylan's own clipped interior dialogue sound like (I imagine) real crime investigators think.

I've been told that it often takes many tries before an author finds his own authentic "voice", but I sense Faustman got it right his first time out of the gate. At least I hope it's his first book; I'm looking forward to Dylan's next adventure. Move over D. Hammett and Raymond Chandler!!

Full disclosure: For about 20 years our family lived right next to the Faustman family in Drexel Hill, a western suburb of Philadelphia. I clearly recall watching the younger "Tommy" practice his jump shot for hours after school on our backyard driveway basketball court. I also grew up with many of the people upon which the novel's characters are based. But I haven't seen or spoken to Tom Faustman or many of those characters in nearly half a century because I went off to the Peace Corps (Africa) and then to Vietnam, and never really returned to the Philadelphia area. Until I read his book I didn't even know that Tom Faustman was an MP in Vietnam; for all I know we served there at the same time [I was in the Mekong Delta working for the US Consulate]. So it was a delight to read his novel and become re-acquainted with the Tom Faustman/Dylan character and some of the other familiar characters in the story -- "The Jimmer", "Gator", "Tony Sol" and many others from the old neighborhood.

Some say that if the plot is good enough it will make for good scenes and for good dialogue. Dylan's Monster has a good plot, good scene descriptions, and great, fully-drawn characters. Oh yeh, and there's that authentic, hard-boiled, Philly repartee that many reviewers, including me, found very amusing. That type of tough-love, New Jersey Soprano's, 'bustin' balls' banter must be hardwired into my genes because it all seemed very familiar and natural to me.

Great story...couldn't put it down!

I admit to having a penchant for reading about serial killers. I find them fascinating from a psychological standpoint. However, I rarely read a book with this topic that had me laughing out loud and so absorbed with the other characters!

Faustman's writing is similar to James Patterson's from the suspense angle, but much more humorous with its fleshing out of the various characters. His irreverence is refreshing and totally realistic. I only hope he writes more books. "Dylan's Monster" is a true joy to recommend to anyone...get this book!
