A most valued addition to my bookshelf.

I am a sucker for books on applied mathematics. This book ranks among my most valued ones, and is always within constant reach for reference on optimization algorithms. The book covers linear programming, nonlinear programming, geometric programming, dynamic programming, integer programming, and stochastic programming. A wide array of methods which seem impressively complete are covered in this 903-page book. The addressing of the topics is geared more towards making the reader understand how the algorithms were derived (which is welcome, in contrast to chasing up the original research papers), and using them. Just about every method is illustrated clearly with examples - a welcome feature of the book. One minor drawback is that all examples and exercises that are applied to engineering, are drawn from mechanical and civil areas (note: there are also many examples that are mathematical toy problems). Having said that, I must hasten to add that I am an electrical engineer, and I have no problem at all in using this book. Strongly recommended for people who work with optimization algorithms!

Great introductory text for engineers!

This work is one of my favorite all-around optimization books. It covers a lot of ground and it is very well written from a pedegogical point of view. Covered are a full range of linear and nonlinear methods, and for both constrained and unconstrained problem types. Also treated are geometric, dynamic, and integer programming techniques. Many of the algorithms within the book are presented with step-by-step examples which greatly assist the reader.

One downside is that I found the explanations of SQP and GRG methods to be confusing and insufficient. As these two techniques are among the more efficient and robust for many NLP problems (which are essential for engineering applications), this was disappointing. I hope Professor Rao will write a fourth edition with improvements in these particular areas. Otherwise, this book stands out as a useful and practical reference for both students and practicing engineers. If I had to have only one general book on optimization, this would be it. Other useful favorites are "Numerical Optimization" by Nocedal and Wright, "Practical Methods of Optimization" by Fletcher, and "Numerical Methods for Unconstrained Optimization and Nonlinear Equations" by Dennis and Schnabel.

Since writing the above review in 1999, I have become familiar with some of the more recent methods for linear optimization. If you are interested in linear/integer optimization, you may be interested to know that this book discusses the simplex method and its derivatives, and describes Gomory cutting plane method for integer programming. Lest you get carried away by the unbridled optimism expressed in the previous review , please note - this book does not cover iterative linear programming methods such as interior point methods, EXCEPT for a rather good, detailed description of Karmarkar's 1984 method (projective transformation), with a numerical example. Another omission is trust-region methods; however line-search methods are discussed. So if 0/1 optimization, interior point methods, semi-definite programming, trust-region methods is your cup of tea, shop elsewhere. I'm rolling back my previous rating from 5-stars to 4-stars on this count.

Best care plan book!!!

This is the best care plan book I have seen so far. My school recommended two other books that I bought but I found this to be better and so easy to use. It is straight to the point and very well ORGANIZED. I can't over emphasize how glad I was when I stumbled on an older version of the Swearigen book. I knew instantly that I needed something like it and I came here to look for the latest edition. If you are new to nursing and are trying to understand what care plans are and how to get started, this book is sure banker!!!

What’s new in this edition?
The fifth edition has additional coverage of the Middle East, Spain, Portugal, South America, and China as well as multi-media and motion graphics. Also, much in the last chapters is new, since graphic design history is changing almost daily. The last chapters are always the most difficult since we are living in the same period when things are happening.

What are the biggest differences between the last edition and this new edition?
In the last edition, I included many more images and improved the quality of others. Resulting from additional research and discoveries, I naturally made changes to the text, but I essentially maintained the same basic structure of the book. This process continued but far more extensively in the fifth edition.

How do you choose the designers who are in the book?
Designers were chosen for having made significant contributions to Graphic Design history. What distinguishes a master from his or her colleagues is both perplexing and difficult. Although every effort is made to avoid this, there will inevitably be the realization that an important figure was omitted. However, the accomplishments of significant individuals that have withstood the test of time will continue to inspire us.

With so much information to cover, do you find it difficult to revise this title?
Phil Meggs often said—and I agree—that one of the gratifying aspects of this book was being able to write the next edition, as you find things that you missed earlier and that each issue becomes more refined and richer in scope.

Do you receive a lot of feedback from readers?
I welcome and greatly value feedback in every stage of the writing and editing. The feedback I do receive usually involves a point of disagreement, such as having omitted a designer or point. But I welcome any positive or negative input from all sources. Comments from teachers are especially useful, as I find it important to learn how the book is used in classroom situations.

About the Author
The late Philip B. Meggs was a designer, educator, and author. He was School of the Arts Research Professor, Communication Arts and Design Department, at Virginia Commonwealth University; visiting faculty at Syracuse University and the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland; and contributing editor to Print magazine. He authored more than a dozen books and 150 articles and papers on design and typography, including a section on graphic design in Encyclopedia Britannica. He was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame and received its Educator's Award for lifetime achievement and significantly shaping the future of the fields of graphic design education and writing.

Alston W. Purvis is Professor of Graphic Design at the Boston University College of Fine Arts. During his career, he has worked as an instructor at The Cooper Union and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at The Hague. His photographs have been exhibited in Amsterdam, London, New York, and Paris. He is the author of Dutch Graphic Design: 1918–1945 and H. N. Werkman; and coauthor of Graphic Design 20th Century; A Century of Posters; Wendingen: A Journal for the Arts 1918–1932; Creative Type; Dutch Graphic Design: A Century of Innovation; Jan Tschichold: Posters of the Avant Garde; Posters NL; Jan Tschichold, Master Typographer: His Life, Work and Legacy; The Ballets Russes and the Art of Design; and Type: A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles.

Great book but the Kindle version is awful - bad styles, low image resoluton. The publisher should be spanked for such product, considered that you can always buy Inkling version that is so much better prepared.

Just keeps getting better

Megg's History of Graphic Design just keeps getting better. The author's completely re-wrote some sections of this book, and added new information. The topics covered bring you right up to contemporary designers/work. Designers from all over the world are also featured. Some of the older sections have also been re-worked, included better quality and color images for early printed books. The section on the development of modernism (in Russia, Europe, and the US) is better than anything you will find in comparable history books. This still leads the field in Graphic Design history. I wish I could have used this version of the text when I was in school. It is definitely a must have for anyone who calls themselves a designer; it seems expensive, but you will get your money's worth out of it. And the book itself, physically, is very high quality and will last a long time.

Inspiring History Lesson for Designers

This book is incredible. If you are a graphic designer, I highly recommend it for your library of inspiration and resource.

Meggs' History of Graphic Design provides such rich history and insight into the world of expression through visual communication. It starts with cave drawings and the origins of the Alphabet to the new digital age and everything in between.

I was surprised to learn how much of our ancestors' findings are used to this day, including origins of font names, and basic printing methods.

The book also goes into explicit detail on how visual evolution was, and still is, so profoundly affected by world economics, war and revolution.

Of course, a book of this caliber would not be complete without images and succinct footnotes. Great to flip through for design inspiration.

If anyone thinks we just "make things pretty" or "doodle all day", well, they're probably just jealous. However, if you want to put them in their place, hand them this resource. This book truly makes me proud to be a graphic designer.

Great Bible Version

This is the Bible I have used for over a decade. It is great. Very legible, great study helps, lots of wonderful creationist, scientific insight. Highly recommend it.I have worn it out and the spine is cracked at Romans 5. Wish it could have lasted longer. Am keeping it for reference.

Overpriced, but a decent read

I'd rate this much higher if the first and second book weren't so miniscule. Both of them together make up a short book. The first book was split in a random place. I like the characters and the plot is fine for a YA fantasy, but the price is too high to get more than a three star rating.

I'd rather pay a full price for a full book than be nickeled and dimed to death paying for three slim volumes that will be the equivalent in price.

Dragon Stone Saga too short for 2 books

I must admit that I did enjoy both books, but as an avid reader of Tom Clancy, the Lord of the Rings and other 900 page books I do not see the need for 3 books other than milking the readers. These books are short enough that there should have been one book for all 3 books. I will not entertain the idea of buying another Kristian Alva book other than Book 3 of the Dragon Stone Saga

About the Author
Trevor Eissler, father of three children attending Montessori schools, is a pilot and flight instructor. His teaching experience is in a jet airplane cockpit at 40,000 feet. The painfully slow evolution of pilot training was brought home to him while observing 3 year-olds in a Montessori classroom. The learning principles that leading-edge aviation instructors were trying to implement (while running up against entrenched bureaucracy in aviation) were the very same principles already implemented and proving wildly successful in Montessori classrooms.

Original and compelling!

I love this book. Trevor Eissler has an easy, conversational writing style, and a gift for translating academic jargon into something useful. He walks readers right into the Montessori classroom and provides the details they crave when trying to compare schools, programs, and philosophies. As a great storyteller with a sense of humor, he entertains as he enlightens. The book is packed with meaty anecdotes and the best of what critics and educators have had to say on the subject of school reform. It held my attention from the first eight word opening sentence to the very last page.

Montessori Madness! not only discusses what's gone wrong in other schools, but also identifies what exactly about the Montessori classroom goes so delightfully right. It inspires parents to experiment and innovate and actively participate in the design of the education of their children. My sense is that Montessori Madness! began as a father's private investigation and evolved into a call to action. I have not found another book out there that gets to the heart of the Montessori education like this book does. Thank you, Trevor Eissler, for a great offering.

Obama must read this book!

As a Montessori teacher for over 30 years, I was thrilled to read Trevor Eissler's book Montessori Madness. This book is not the usual dry treatise on education, but an entertaining, thought-provoking insight into Montessori philosophy. A father of three children and a pilot by profession, Mr. Eissler uses his own interesting life experiences to illustrate the basic tenets of Montessori philosophy. His colorful and descriptive analogies paint a picture so moving, so profound, and yet so entertaining, one cannot put it down. Montessori Madness is not only an informative book for Montessori parents; it is an impassioned plea for a complete paradigm shift in education. I'm ordering a copy for President Obama!

A compelling and personal argument for Montessori Education

We recently ordered this book after wanting to know more about the Montessori education our child receives and to help us decide how long we would keep our child enrolled at his Montessori school. The book really catches your attention as Trevor Eissler tells the story of his family's journey to Montessori education and as he describes the environment where his children attend school. The book is written with a light touch: the author is full of engaging ancedotes of his own life experience that are both relevant and humorous.

In the end, this book helped us understand more about why this educational approach has worked so well for our child. It also provided a well-reasoned explanation of why Montessori education should be available to all children, and why that is not an unreasonable goal. Now we need Mr. Eissler to write a how-to manual on where to go from here!

Ryan Deiss has been able to distill actionable core marketing concepts for any business regardless of size, in a very easy to follow, soup-to-nuts format. This book is rich with tools, complete with email templates and other useful systems contained within it that can be customized easily for any business type or industry. We’ve been following these concepts for over a year now and can attest that his tested and proven systems have created value to our bottom line across 2 businesses: digital content sales and capital cultivation. I’ve read about 30 books in the past two years and this could easily be considered this generations Breakthrough Advertising, the Gene Schwartz staple. Ryan makes a point to dissect customer psychology and why it's critical today to front load the value you give to your customer. Anyone thinking of starting a business from zero should start here first, regardless of industry. Highest recommendation without reservation.

Terrible formatting makes for a poor reader experience.

This book is unreadable because of the horrible formatting. The style should be called: Wall O' Text. It's distracting and terrible. So I have to ask myself, should I trust this author to understand email marketing if he can't figure out how to make a proper ebook? You can decide for yourself. But the price is steep for an ebook, and really a shame for an unreadable one.

This book provides a strong system for email marketing and lead generation. I'm always a little disappointed when most of the examples come from "get rich quick" or "How to make money web sites." I would have like to see more examples from the real world.

Still, all in all worth a read.

DAVID PRUTCHI, PhD, is Vice President of Engineering at Impulse Dynamics. An adept do-it-yourselfer, he is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge experimental physics within the grasp of fellow science buffs. In addition to being the lead author of Design and Development of Medical Electronic Instrumentation (Wiley), he has published over 30 scientific publications and holds over 70 patents.

SHANNI R. PRUTCHI is a high-school junior at Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. An avid science and engineering enthusiast, she conducts research with her father in the areas of radio astronomy and quantum physics.

Genius of the book is in the many experiements

It's an expensive book, but it is interesting, fun and inspiring. The genius of this book is in the many experiments and their explanation. Even if the reader never performed any of the experiments they go a long ways towards clarifying Quantum Mechanics (and a number of other areas of physics) beyond the average textbook and providing an intuitive "feel" for the subject. A good book.
However, I have two complaints. The cover of the book describes the experiments as being "relatively inexpensive" and that they use "readily available" parts. Although this is true for the majority of the experiments it's not true for some of them. A few of them would require quite a bit of luck locating components even if you could afford them. The other complaint is with the publisher because even though the book is a quality product the illustrations are very small. I literally needed to keep a magnifying glass with me in order to read the illustrations and I have average eyesight.
Nevertheless, this book delivers and if the author were to write a similar book on another topic I would be one of the first in line to buy it.

The Best Amateur Science Book On the Market

This book is the best amateur science book available today. It covers a difficult subject with such mastery that the authors make it seem easy. Much effort was put forth in finding ways to make the experiments affordable. A complete listing of web sites offering surplus equipment is provided. I have not done all the experiments listed, but the ones that I have done work exactly as described. Most of the topics of quantum physics are covered in historical order, so the reader gets a sense of how the story unfolded. Many of the great and now classical experiments are included from the wave-particle duality of light through the strange phenomenon of entanglement.

Thru this book we all have a way to introduce the beauty of the micro world to our children and to ourselves. It is important to add that this was not achieved by skipping the hard parts. David and Shanni Prutchi have found a way to make difficult ideas simple and effective without sacrificing the truth. This elegance is the heart of science itself.

A delight for advanced level DIY people who love physics.

As a retired electrical engineer and student of physics I found Exploring Quantum Physics through Hands-On Projects totally absorbing. I believe I could set-up and operate most any of these experiment-demonstrations. Since there are significant (on my budget) costs involved to many of these experiments I choose to live through each of the set-ups and demonstrations vicariously. However, since the level of buildup is so well detailed I may use some of the instructions to build equipment for other uses.
