I love the Scarcity series and this one was another great ...

I love the Scarcity series and this one was another great book. All the characters show such love and help each other through any hard times. While the books deal with heavy issues it is never dark or depressing. Not everyone gets a great family as birth but this series shows that families don't have to be families you are born into. AKM Miles always writes about hope and finding happiness surrounded by loved ones.

I have every book that AKM Miles has written and this one has be my favorite. All of our favorite guys are back. Make sure to have your tissues when reading about the twins, I'm glad Ben got his story.

A perfect addition to the Scarcity Sanctuary series.

AKM Miles' Scarcity stories are always on my must-read list. The stories never disappoint and Seeing Double is no exception. I fell in love with Jojo and Jaja immediately. Watching their interaction was just, as Dillon would say, precious. It is so heartwarming to read the ongoing stories of Soldier's and Dillon's boys and I was glad that Ben got his story and to see love grow between Ben and Chip.

This story has a whole lot of action packed into it. One of AKM's strengths is describing how evil people get what is coming to them, and it many inventive ways. And boy, do they!

Seeing Double is a moving addition to the Scarcity Sanctuary series. Perhaps the best news was in the dedication - there will be more stories!

The handknitted footwear of European folk cultures from Scotland to Greece to Estonia was the focus of Folk Socks, Bush's earlier book. To research her current book, she returned to Estonia to study its history, cultural traditions, and local knitting techniques and patterns. For centuries, the art of knitting played a significant part in the everyday life of Estonia, but as the country becomes more and more Westernized, knitting is in danger of dying out. Bush has done a great service in preserving the story of these traditions and teaching them to a new generation of knitters in the West. She pays particular attention to knitting techniques little known in the West such as the double-start cast-on, knitted-in braids, and the aptly named "Heart of a Blossom" toe finish. With 25 projects, all of them enchanting; highly recommended for large public and academic libraries and textile collections.

Don't Hate, Don't Love

The most interesting part of this book is the Estonian technique section. The selection of yarns used in the projects: socks, gloves, & mittens over & over again, is escoteric to say the least. I realize this book is dated & yarns come & go but even when this book was current only the Koigo Merino was (& is) widely available. No useful information about the yarns is provided which would enable the knitter to substitute--no wpi, no Yarn Standards. The author mentions the knitting of pullovers including the cast on used but no pullover project or photo or even a description is provided. There are only a couple of dozen of color charts all of which I've seen before. If I had had this book in hand before buying, I probably would've passed it by.

Not About the Martial Art

Contrary to a previous reviewer (who appears not to have read the book), this book is not about the Chinese martial art of Pa Kua or any other style of the Chinese martial arts, and there is nothing about self-defense in the book. (I've trained in the martial art of Pa Kua, and would know.) Instead, the book is about the system (mostly for Taoist divination) of eight diagrams called the pa kua (ba gua in Pinyan romanization, literally, "eight trigrams") on which the martial art of Pa Kua are based on, which explains the confusion exhibited by the previous reviewer.

The book details how the eight trigrams figured in Chinese history, philosophy and religion, including much information about the monotheistic worship of Shang Ti, which was the original religion of China. As such, it is a good read for anyone interested in the subject. I have one caveat: the author is a good writer, but more of a mystic than a scientist or historian. Having said that, anyone interested in Chinese culture, religion and history will enjoy the book.

A Great Resource

This is a must have book for anyone owning an HPX camera, but it also has valuable information regarding video recording systems and cameras in general. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the way the book is organized. It takes a bit of searching if you are trying to find information on a particular topic. I recommend reading it all the way through once, then going through it again with your camera in front of you to familiarize yourself with all the things your camera can do. If you own an HPX camera...you need this book!

Philip Carlo was born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. His research for The Night Stalker included spending over 100 hours with Richard Ramirez at San Quentin’s Death Row. The photo above was taken on the day of Ramirez’s wedding on Death Row. He also wrote the true-crime bestsellers The Ice Man, The Butcher, and Gaspipe.

The Night Stalker

Excellent book! A good read for those of you who like to read true crime stories. This book is a true account of the notorious "Night Stalker" know as Richard Ramirez, a Satan-worshiping heartless killer who racked-up one of the highest body counts in California history. The book details Richard's killing spree, crime by crime, then takes you through the capture, trial, and conviction of this psychopath.
This book does not contain crime scene photos that include the victims, but does show some of the interior of the houses in which the crimes were committed. This is a good thing for those of you who do not want to be subject to gore. Photos include Richard Ramirez at the trial, including some photos of the police and lawyers involved with the capture and conviction.

Leave your lights on and lock your doors!

I have been an avid reader (mosty of the True Crime genre) for many years. I enjoy wandering into the realm and dangerousness of crime and criminals without the exposure. Having had read many other stories about famed serial killers, I knew that when I saw this book that I had to read it. Prior to discovering this book, I had only basic knowledge of the crimes of Richard Ramirez through criminal documentaries or television programs. I must say, I am overwhelmed. This book is probably THE BEST book on crime/criminality that I have ever read! It goes through every facet of the story to be told, the background history on Ramirez, the accounts from the detectives' perspectives, and the fear and reign of terror were quite palpable. I admit that this book scared me and left me with some residual emotional scars that only a good book can-- For instance, I am now a compulsive lock-checker and I have started making sure that I am able to thwart an attack of similar magnitude by leaving myself random items that can be used as weapons and/or ways to know if someone is skulking around my home. It's not paranoia...it's considering what most people do not want to consider--that they may become victims at some point. I am sure that the families impacted by the Night Stalker never imagined that when they went to bed that their entire safety and security would be imposed upon...in their own homes. I digress...
The book is superb! From learning about what could have possibly set this into motion within Ramirez's youth and learning how "normal" and well-versed he could also be is just another facet of why he was so bone-chilling and terrifying. Phillip Carlo did an excellent job on the research, on the writing, on the many things that make this book such an excellent account of the Night Stalker crimes. It quickly has become top-brass to me & ranks right up there with the best: Ann Rule, Truman Capote, Vincent Bugliosi. Fascinating read!

Pathetically Violent, Deadly, and a Manhunt for this Monster.

Richard Ramirez. The Nightstalker. Scary guy, that did some extremely horrible and violent things. A man who worshipped the Devil. Ramirez terrorized Los Angeles and the surrounding area, as well as San Fransisco. This book delves into the history of Ramirez himself, from childhood to apprehension, as well as the sensational and almost unbelievable trial that took place. Ramirez was ultimately a thief who broke into residential homes and took items he could then hawk to pay for the dirty motel rooms he preferred, and pay for his cocaine addiction. His crimes evolved, however, and so did he. Becoming an infamous man well known for the brutal and often ridiculous crimes he committed.
I enjoyed how the book also describes in detail the detectives who hunted the man (one detective had previously achieved a great deal of fame for hunting and capturing the Hillside Stranglers), and how the detectives tied the crimes of Ramirez together, realizing they were hunting a serial killer on the loose who was showing no signs of ever slowing down.
This is a side note, but one worth mentioning I believe. Ramirez, had an uncle who he was close to. A decorated Vietnam veteran, who saw more than his fair share of combat. The man had pictures of some of the things he did to the Vietnamese. Rape, torture, death. He showed these pictures to Richard. He also taught Richard many tactics that Richard used later while committing his crimes. One more thing; this man, Richard's uncle also shot his girlfriend in their home, point blank range. Richard was there, witnessed this first hand as a boy. Richard's uncle served time for this murder, and was later released. I only mention all this because I find it hard to believe that all of this didn't have an effect on Richard.
Ramirez was sentenced to die, however, he appealed his case to the end and died in prison many years after his crimes were committed, from health issues.
Overall, if you're a true crime fan, this book is a must read. You may also find yourself looking over the security of your home.
