Summarizing 50 Years of Research

There are an awful lot of opinions about children's television. This has in turn generated an awful lot of research, most of it well done, about the effects of television on children. This book, in turn consists of eight essays that summarize the relavant research in critical areas such advertising, program content, how children learn from TV, health aspects and of course violence. The essays are written by individuals who are recognized experts in their fields.

This book has been in preparation for about ten years and represents the net result of reviewing more than 2,000 research papers published in the United States. It describes the nature of the research that has been conducted as well as their findings. It also discusses, in many cases, the effects of what the findings discovered are also mentioned.

Finally there is a complete bibliography of the research reports included in the book and on a CD supplied with the book.

From a successful applicant's point of view, this book is awesome.

I applied to medical school this past cycle and matriculated this year at a top 20 school. As a successful applicant, I have to say that Insider's Pre-Med Guidebook is probably your best resource out there for a roadmap to getting into medical school, from selecting your undergraduate institution all the way to choosing which school to go to after you've been admitted. As a pre-med, you definitely will hear a LOT of conflicting advice from a lot of different sources - from SDN to your school counselors to older students - which can be really confusing and overwhelming at times. I think that this book basically sums up all the GOOD advice that's out there, probably because it's WRITTEN BY ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE MEMBERS working in tandem with the students they advised over the years who got into medical school.

After the long and grueling process of acquiring experience to be a competitive applicant and then applying to medical school, I've learned a lot about the process, and this book has been VERY ACCURATE. It will tell you what distinguishes a strong from a weak applicant, and it does so in a very organized, well-written, straightforward manner. It will give you practical advice. I used a lot of resources during my application process, and I think this book is the best one out there, better than MedEdits and So, You Want to Be a Physician (both of which are sort of outdated in my opinion). This book is also a good way to judge/offset the advice you get from your own schools' career counselors, which may not be the most accurate.

In summary, this book is great, and you should definitely take a peek if you want to get into medical school. I think it's unfortunate that the application process is so competitive for poor students who just want to help people and better humanity. This book will help you out :)

Great Resource for Everyone Interested in Going to Medical School

Very informative guidebook in helping navigate the complex road to medical school. I appreciated how the authors' address the question "how to determine if medicine is right for me?". A question I think everyone student should ask before embarking on this major life decision. This book outlines each step of the process from college course load, GPA, MCAT,volunteer work, how to apply, personal statement, recommendations, interviews, wait lists, to acceptances and much more. It also includes information for minority, older and disadvantaged applicants. I found the "horror stories" of what not to do during the interviews very helpful because they are real life scenarios from the authors' experiences sitting on med school admission committees. The charts are easy to understand and offer an honest look at what each medical school requires. I have purchased this book for my own teenage children and have recommended this book to other parents who have children interested in medicine.

Highly Recommended! - Gives Specific Advice from Experts

Based on a recommendation from a friend, I bought this book for my niece in high school who is considering a career in medicine. Before giving it to her, I thought I’d look through the first few pages to make sure it was worth her time. Well, before I knew it, I was reading the entire book! It’s a real easy read full of insightful commentary and specific advice on how to prepare for a career in medicine. It goes through each facet of a med school application in detail to maximize an applicant’s chances of getting in. I especially liked how it goes through specific action plans for different scenarios. I’d highly recommend this book for anyone considering going into medicine.

The book is great for media beginners, full of case studies and concrete examples. It's also very modern, it has a companion website, Twitter stream and Flickr stream: [...] and [...]. The latter is a funny way of learning media theory through images: ethnography, slash fiction, discourse analysis. If all books were presented like that, the session of exams would be a lot less painful..

A romantic time travel speculation of an ancient eruption

This book combines romantic science fiction with a historical backdrop. Anderson's strong character development and great storytelling makes this novel a great read. The first time I read this book I could not put it down and nearly did not sleep that night. It was that exciting and fast paced. He uses time travel as a method of moving the main character back to ancient history during the height of Cretan civilization and who falls in love with a beautiful bull dancer. He uses the eruption of Krakatowa as the pivotal event. I recently reread the book and it still works for me!

Love In A Time Forgotten

"Dancer" is an historical romance using the element of time travel as a deus ex machina to move the modern day character architect Duncan Reid into the near mythic past of Atlantis. Reid is a late 1960s everyman, drifting apart from his wife Pam, searching for definition in his life when he is caught up in a vortex created by an out of control timeship, along with 3 others. One is a Hunnish horseman from the mid Byzantine era, the second, Oleg, is a proto Ukrainian from the year 1050 AD and the last, Erissa, is the titular Dancer from Atlantis, only 20 years distant from her time. Moreover she not only remembers the destruction of the island, but also recognizes Reid from her past!

The foursome are cast on the shores of North Africa along with the wreck of the time ship. Conveniently the pilot, badly injured, gives them a pair of helmets which can used to learn each others' languages (solving a common plotting problem) - and then dies. Reid decides that Erissa's language, as it's the earliest, should be the common one to learn, and that they should head to the temporal epicentre Atlantis, partly to rescue the younger Erissa as seems to be foreordained, and in part to be rescued themselves and returned to their own times, though as the story evolves the three men are tempted to use their advanced knowledge to advantage in this older time, possibly resulting in a changed history.

What elevates the story is Poul's interesting take on the interplay of between Cretan and Aechaean/Athenian culture and a tidy explanation of the roles of Linear A and B. His Labryinth is not a physical maze, but the Palace of Minos - the actual maze being the system of tribute and control that the Minotians use to keep the peace over its Aegean empire, and the minotaur is actually a series of bulls used in religious ceremony, which links nicely to Erissa's votary vocation as a "bull dancer".

Well constructed and readable, but not outstanding; tasteful handling of romantic encounters. Anderson does a much better job with time travel in his later stories- this tale is a bit of a throwaway, but one I'd not read before. I'd give it a rating of 3.2/5.

Good time travel yarn of the time of Crete and Theseus

Classsic Poul Anderson. This is a short novel of only ~170 pages. The premise is that three people from different eras, a modern man, a Rus from about 1000 AD, and a Hun from about 400AD are caught up in the wreck of a time ship of someone from the future and end up in the times of ancient Crete and Knossos before the volcanic explosion that shattered that civilization. They there interact in somewhat complex ways with the the civilizations of the time. The story is interesting and the portrayal of all peoples from their times rings true. I also like that the story is as long as it has to be and doesn't suffer from the modern bloat you see today.

The peaceful Zuni of New Mexico and Arizona are much studied, partly because their language, culture and physical appearance set them apart from other Native American peoples. Davis, an anthropologist who has made 10 visits to the Zuni pueblo, now offers the startling thesis that a group of Japanese Buddhists left earthquake-wracked medieval Japan and came by ship to the Southern California coast, eventually migrating inland to the Zuni territory, where they merged their culture and genes with Native Americans to produce the modern Zuni people around A.D. 1350. Davis uses "forensic" evidence--including analyses of dental morphology, blood and skeletal remains--to support a Japanese-Zuni connection. Further, she notes the Zuni's exceptionally high incidence of a specific kidney disease that is also unusually common in Japan. Yet she acknowledges there have been no DNA studies to confirm or refute her hypothesis, and she has not turned up a single 13th-century Japanese item in North America. Her bold, highly speculative theory gets a boost from some cultural parallels, including striking similarities between the Zuni and Japanese languages; between the Zuni "sacred rosette" found on robes and pottery and the Japanese Buddhist chrysanthemum symbol (presently Japan's imperial crest). A Zuni mid-January ceremony with masked monsters, aimed at frightening children into proper behavior, is almost identical to one in Japan. Davis's broader thesis that the Pacific was a "liquid highway" mounts a serious challenge to the entrenched idea of the peopling of the Americas solely via the Bering Strait land bridge. Davis, an independent anthropological researcher with a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, has developed a bold and unorthodox theory to account for some of the cultural, linguistic, and religious characteristics that set the Zuni people apart from other Pueblo Indian groups. Davis hypothesizes that a small group of Japanese men, possibly on a religious pilgrimage to find the "middle-world" of Buddhism, may have sailed to North America in the late 13th century and then traveled eastward. Eventually, she posits, they may have settled in the area of present-day western New Mexico, intermingling their customs and religious practices with those of the local Native Americans. Davis's theory is well thought out and provides intricate comparisons among many Japanese and Zuni cultural characteristics. Her work is an engaging and persuasive presentation of an alternative migration theory that perhaps deserves more serious consideration by anthropological scholars. This is what scholarship is supposed to be. Although her thesis is bound to be controversial, Davis makes a stunning and carefully supported argument that should stir useful discussion. The Southwest's Zuni people are among the most studied indigenous Americans, but no one had previously noticed--at least, not in print--that some of the Zuni vocabulary seems Japanese. That perception inspired Davis through decades of study, on which this book is based. An anthropologist, Davis examines various forms of evidence: physical, such as the prevalence of certain diseases and blood types among both Zuni and Japanese; cultural, such as motifs that appear in the art of both peoples; and cosmological, that is, myths and ideas found among both. She contends that a splinter sect of Buddhists left Japan in the thirteenth century and traveled east in search of a new spiritual homeland, and that Zuni culture is the result of an amalgamation of Asian and indigenous American beliefs and cultural ways. Written in clear, evocative language, this is exciting, groundbreaking work. Patricia Monaghan

Interesting Thesis but Sketchy Evidence

The author suggests that medieval Japanese sea-goers arrived just in time to join the Zuni Native Americans in their search for the center of the world. The Japanese, according to the author, were also on a search for the Western Paradise of the Jodo Shu and Shin-Shu Buddhists. Somehow these two searches became one and the Japanese group over time became part of the Zuni genetic and cultural heritage. Davis points to linguistic, genetic and cultural parallels between the Zuni and the Japanese, reconsiders ancient stories of the Zuni, and presents some dubious artifacts as evidence for her claims. I found myself wishing for more evidence more clearly presented. Still, the thesis is intriguing enough to warrant four stars.

Really fascinating read

What a great book. Facts are presented very clearly and in detail. If you're interested in either Japanese or Native American history this is worth the price of the hardcover. Is the author's thesis correct? Well, that's hard to say for sure but she poses very credible arguments and definately leaves the reader with a lot of fascinating possibilities on the origin of Zuni culture. The book is not necessarily light reading but it is a fairly easy read just because the subject matter is so well-presented. You can tell this was a real labor of love for the author. A must for any anthropology student!

Around 1912 a gold prospector called Kincaid discovered a cave in the grand canyon whilst travelling down the Colorado river. Inside the cave he found scrolls and a large Buddha. He notified a friend in the Smithsonian and the museum sent people to remove the contecnt of the cave, and block up the entrance. This was reported in the Phoenix Gazette. Ever since nothing has been heard of this find and the Smithsonian is silent. So this connects to the book... monks from Japan are a possibility, the others intermarried and never returned to Japan.

For anyone interested in the History of Math

I enjoyed this book immensely as it painted the picture of how modern mathematics evolved from ancient times. The author does a great job of bringing you through the issues of time when the theories were forming and providing an understanding of how ancient cultures dealt with math that is otherwise rudimentary today.
If you have always enjoyed math (as a hobby or career) you will most likely appreciate the road that has been paved before us by the mathematical giants detailed in the book. For those who may not have much math experience, this book does a decent job at explaining most of the concepts before referring to them.
However, if you are merely interested in a good story and lack the appreciation for the mathematical contributions of these great thinkers (as another reviewer has) this book is not for you.

Good history of mathematics

A very interesting history of mathematics by british author Stuart Hollingdale. The book is arranged in chronological order, with the first chapter dealing with the mathematics of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and the last chapter with the latest developments in math. The mathematics of ancient Greece is covered very thoroughly, in particular. Each chapter, with the exception of the first one, takes the work of one mathematician to analyze the mathematics of the period. One can argue with the book here and there (putting Einstein as a mathematician, covering very little of 20th century developments) but all in all this is a good volume. Note: while the book is not overly complex, it is not for the completely uninitiated either, as it supposes some previous knowledge of math to understand it.

Stand in awe...

Somehow this book found its way into my library 20 years ago. (I am a land surveyor who does trig and geometry for a living.) I value it highly, and since it is yellowing, I searched Amazon to see if it is still available. Thankfully, it is. The chapter on Archimedes, and especially his "Method" of "mechanically" relating weights, levers, and volumes, should humble the most vain intelligence out there.

About the Author

Jonathan Lee received his PhD degree from Texas A&M University in 1993, the year he joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Central University (NCU) in Taiwan. His research interests include agent-based software engineering, service-oriented computing and goal-driven software engineering. He is currently a Professor of CSIE and the Director of Computer Center at NCU. Dr. Jonathan Lee has published more than 100 refereed papers, three edited books and an authoring text book on Software Engineering in Chinese. He received a Distinguished University Professor award from Chinese Electrical Engineering Association (Taiwan) in 2008 and an Endowed Professor award from NCU in 2007. He is a senior member of the IEEE Computer Society and a member of the ACM.

Shang-Pin Ma received his PhD and BS degrees in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Central University, Chungli, Taiwan, in 2007 and 1999, respectively. He has been an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department, National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung, Taiwan, since 2008. His research interests include web-based software engineering, service-oriented computing and semantic web.

Alan Liu received the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1994. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Chung Cheng University, Chiayi, Taiwan. His research interests in artificial intelligence and software engineering include knowledge acquisition, requirements analysis, intelligent agents, service computing and applications in embedded systems and robotic systems. Dr. Liu is a member of IEEE, ACM, Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering Association of Taiwan and Robotics Society of Taiwan.

I read the Price Action breakdown book from the author as well. Please look for that review and read it. It is worth your while!!! You will not be disappointed. Follow the lessons, take time to understand them. You WILL develop into a good trader if you follow the logic and examples in this and the price action book.

I've got dozens of books and videos on trading, but this book really put it together for me on how to trade in the direction of an existing trend. We all know we should do that, but how do you jump in at the correct location in a pull back? It all makes logical sense and is as close to the holy grail as you will ever get!
