Defector (Historical Cold War fiction)
Do you want to understand what it was like in the cockpit of the Phantom fighter during the Cold War in West Germany? Read on.

Colonel Yuri Andrenev, a respected test pilot is trusted to evaluate the latest Soviet fighter, the Sukhoi Su27 “Flanker”, from a secret test facility near Moscow. Surely he is above suspicion? With thoughts of defection in his mind, and flying close to the Inner German Border, could he be tempted to make a daring escape across the most heavily defended airspace in the world? A flight test against a Mig fighter begins a sequence of events that forces his hand and after an unexpected air-to-air encounter he crosses the border with the help of British Phantom crews. How will Western Intelligence use this unexpected windfall? Are Soviet efforts to recover the advanced fighter as devious as they seem or could more sinister motives be in play?

Defector is a pacy thriller which reflects the intrigue of The Cold War. It takes you into the cockpit of the Phantom fighter jet with the realism that can only come from an author who has flown operationally in the NATO Central Region.

From the Author
The Cold War ended in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin Wall with barely a shot exchanged in anger. It was one of history's longest standoffs. Two of the mightiest military power blocs the World has ever seen faced each other across a ribbon of land which became the heaviest defended stretch of territory since the trenches of World War 1. The Inner German Border. On one side NATO, with a concentration of force which never dissipated after victory over Nazi Germany at the end of World War 2. Operating from hardened bunkers and aircraft shelters, life was a long rehearsal for World War 3. On the other side The Warsaw Pact engaged in a struggle to impose communism on unwilling satellites trying to match a technically superior foe by sheer weight of numbers.

To understand the motivations of the men who flew the iconic Phantom, you need to appreciate what went on in their daily lives on the ground and in the air. The Phantom and the Su27 are characters in this story and they become pawns in the chess match. In the Su27 Flanker, the Soviets have a fighter which has the potential to redress the technological balance and if the West can exploit its secrets, the delicate balance may tip in its favour.
In an intricate tale of Cold war intrigue and duplicity, the plot takes you from a secret test facility on the outskirts of Moscow to the heart of an active airbase, RAF Wildenrath in West Germany with a brief stop in the corridors of power. A defector who bolts with his high tech prototype fighter may invoke political strategies on a grand scale but doesn't life always have a way of making things personal?

Could it have happened? The plot is fictional but the descriptions are real. Strange things undoubtedly did occur such as Viktor Belenko landing his Mig 25 Foxbat in Japan in 1976. By the end of this book you'll know what it was like to fight the Cold War as I take you into the cockpit with a level of detail that could only come from having flown the mighty Phantom in NATO's Central Region.

A great Cold War-era thriller, packed full of action
By Rudnei D. da Cunha
This is the sort of book that makes you want not to drop it until finished. A disgruntled Soviet pilot, high-ranking officer, decides to defect to the West. You will almost fly as a third crewmen in RAF Phantoms, feel the excitement in mock air combat exercises and then onto engagements with Soviet aircraft. It's gut wrenching following a damaged Phantom being flown by the pilot's fingertips as it is nursed back to a friendly air station West of the The Wall. The author, with many years of experience as a frontline navigator in Phantoms stationed in RAF Germany, brings life back to those days when World War III was just round the corner. Fully recommended!

Excellent perspective of life as Phantom aircrew.
By Mike Beason
This book is well written, portraying the life of Phantom F-4E aircrews in Germany, as told through the fiction of a incident involving a Russian pilot defector. David tells the story while doing a great job explaining how a Phantom operates. Even more important to me, a former US Phantom pilot, he weaves in several flying scenarios, giving realistic details of air combat that brought back many memories of my time in Germany. This thriller would appeal to any fighter pilot or thrill-seeking fighter pilot wannabe. Readers of Tom Clancy or Richard Herman would also enjoy this.

A great book, hard to put down.
By K. Schanke
Having been there and done that in F-4Es both at Bitburg with the 53rd Squadron and at Ramstein with the 512th Squadron, David's book brought back memories of the dark nights and horrible weather we had to face at times. His details on the F-4 were quite good. Overall, he did a great job of weaving the participants into the story. If you like this book, try reading mine, "Pigeons to Peshawar", for more F-4 tales.

Kenneth F. Schanke, Major, USAF (Ret)
