About the Author

Jeanne Ellis Ormrod holds a B.A. degree in psychology from Brown University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in educational psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. For many years she was a faculty member at the University of Northern Colorado, where she taught courses in learning and cognition, educational psychology, measurement, and research methods; she is currently Professor Emerita of Psychological Sciences at UNC. Dr. Ormrod has published numerous research articles but is probably best known for this book and several other textbooks: Educational Psychology: Developing Learners (8th ed., 2014); Essentials of Educational Psychology (4th ed., 2015); Our Minds, Our Memories: Enhancing Thinking and Learning at All Ages (2011); Child Development and Education (with Teresa McDevitt; 5th ed., 2013); and Practical Research: Planning and Design (with Paul Leedy, 11th ed., 2016).

Good as far as textbooks go

As far as textbooks go- this is an easy read. It feels more like the author is having a conversation with you about the content. It's not one of those dry textbooks that you struggle to read more than a page at a time and it's easy to learn from. The only thing I didn't like was that it's just loose unbound paper that needs to be put in your own binder.

Easy identification for those different critters!

As a diver I encounter many different critters. If I see something weird I take a picture of it. When I sit down later to go through all my shots I flip through and find out what it is. Just what I was looking for.

I'm a beginner - novice scuba diver and enjoy underwater photography. I really wanted something that wasn't overly complicated to help me identify various creatures when scuba diving in Jamaica. I bought the series of 3 (Reef Creatures, Coral and Fish) and these were precisely what I wanted. The first few pages have some drawn illustrations to guide you to which class you are looking for and go to that section where there are excellent color photos to help identify the species. Every species listed also has a short blurb to tell you specific identifying features (which can be helpful if the specimen you're identifying was a little varied from the photo), the prevalence in the area, normal dwelling areas (like in coral, near sponges, etc) to be even more specific to help you identify. I've already used this to help me id species from past photographs. They are very comprehensive and easy to use.

My only minor problem and is probably more my fault for not looking at the shipping weights, is that they are a tad heavier than expected. I'm going on another dive trip soon and plan on taking them with me and perusing them between dives and they will definitely require that I lighten my luggage. Together all 3 books (spiral bound with plastic cover) weigh about 5-6 lbs. Comparatively considering prices for other guides which usually had complaints of not being easy to use, no color photos, not enough info., I'm still very happy I bought these. I think the value for the money (purchased used - good to very good condition via Amazon), was more than excellent. Even knowing the weight, I would definitely buy again.

Great Gift

I bought the Reef Fish and Reef Creatures book for my boyfriend (26) for Christmas 2013. We go to the Caribbean annually and he loves snorkeling so this was the perfect gift. He actually "hates reading"... but every time I go to his house, the books are in a different spot (couch table, bedroom, bathroom - lol) so I know he is reading them often and enjoying them. I've gotten lost in them a couple times myself. They have great pictures, great info on how the species are classified, and are perfect for identifying what we have already seen. The info for each fish is only a couple lines, but if he has more questions he just googles the name. Much easier than googling "red fish I saw in Punta Cana" haha. I recommend these - pictures are great for all ages, but info is pretty abbreviated so probably for young teens and up as far as the reading goes.

The book opens with concise, unusually clear introductory chapters on classical statistical mechanics, quantum statistical mechanics and the relation of statistical mechanics to thermodynamics. Then follows a wide-ranging, detailed examination of various applications. Chapter 4 deals with fluctuations. The fifth chapter treats the theory of imperfect gases and condensation, largely following Mayer's theory but also giving some new, alternative derivations and discussing in the final section Yang and Lee's theory. The sixth chapter is devoted to a discussion of distribution functions and the theory of the liquid state. Chapter 7 deals with nearest-neighbor (Ising) lattice statistics, while the last chapter discusses free-volume and hole theories of liquids and solids.
Written primarily for graduate students and researchers in chemistry, physics and biology who already have some acquaintance with statistical mechanics, the book lends itself to use as a text for a second course in statistical mechanics, as a supplement to a first course or for self-study or reference. The level is neither introductory nor highly sophisticated; the author has generally emphasized material that is not available in other books. In addition, selected bibliographic references at the end of each chapter suggest supplementary reading.

A must-read in stat mech

This is the Dover edition of the 1956 book by Hill on Statistical Mechanics (it was followed by companion book in 1960, also available from Dover). The book is a readable exposition of the foundations and most important results of statistical mechanics. The intended audience is advanced students of statistical mechanics, however, some previous acquaintance with statistical mechanics is recommended. His follow up book, An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics (I've heard it referred to by some as ``baby Hill'') is a better starting point for the first-time student.

The book treats a small number of subjects (there are 8 chapters in total) but in detail (this review is based on the chapters I have read so far, 1-4 and 7).

The fundamentals are developed in chapters 1-4 which establish the ensembles, first from the classical Gibbs perspective (chapter 1), then from a quantum mechanical point of view (chapter 2). In chapter 3 Hill develops a generalized ensemble from which the microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical follow as special cases. This part ends with the discussion of fluctuations in chapter 4. The remaining four chapters are devoted to general applications: the treatment of imperfect gases and condensation (Mayer's cluster expansion), distribution functions, and lattice statistics.

Overall the book is very readable by anyone who has some previous exposition to statistical mechanics and the basic mathematical tricks in working with partition functions. There are some small problems. Chapter 7 (nearest neighbor lattice statistics) is uncharacteristically disorganized and unbalanced with respect to explanations relative to chapter 1-4. Notation is not always helpful. A large number of variables in bold and script letters make the reading of equations a chore. This chore becomes even more laborious by the small type of the book (I estimate that the main font is point size 10 or 9, if not less). Dover would do scientists a huge favor by reissuing the book in larger format.

Hill's strength is in not over-explaining things: all mathematical detail is made available to the reader who must then use make use of his/her own brain to make sense of it. For the most part this works well for anyone willing to put the effort (for those who want some guidance in reading about statistical mechanics, an excellent companion is Pathria's book).

Very good text if you have the other book by hill on 'stat thermo' or a previous background on the subject, yet another Dover bargain.

This text is a classic. It is a bit dated, but the clarity of the presentation and the completeness make it a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone working in theoretical biophysics, physical chemistry or molecular physics.

great pictures, ok text

The idea behind this book is delightful: acetate overlays peel back to reveal the same view of the particular city several centuries (or even millenia) later. Although the limp text isn't up to the standards of the pictures, it's still worth it. A great gift for travelers and history lovers.
