This is a fun, informative book about the Dewey decimal system the young reader will enjoy ...

Melvil scratched his head as he stood on a stool and looked at the piles and piles of books on the shelves. It was just a big mess and there wasn't any way he could find what he was looking for. When he grew up he was able to "make a system to organize those stack of books and classify and list `em." What Melvil did was make it easy for us to find where nonfiction books are in a library. "The Dewey decimal sytem keep nonfiction in its place. / Books are grouped by subject, such as art or outer space. / This system mainly covers books on topics that are real: / people, things, and places jammed with factual appeal!" In other words, when you go into a library you'll be able to find what you are looking for instead of looking at a jumble of books.

If you think you want to learn more about the Internet you'd simply head to the shelves that are "labeled with the zeroes, or the Os." You can see the labels on the ends of the shelves and on the spines of the books. Easy peasy! If you head to the 100s you can find out all about us, even those unusual things like ghosts and people like Harry Houdini. When you want to learn about the religions of the world "and probe beliefs and faiths of people living around the globe," it's off to the 200s. Anything you need to know about can easily be found if you know how the Dewey decimal system works. What section do you think this book would be in?

This vibrant book makes the system come alive as Cleary's inimitable rhyming scheme helps children learn where to find nonfiction books in a library. This is not an in-depth look at the system, but rather an introductory one for the younger student. The artwork is particularly vibrant as it dances throughout the pages. For example, when we take a peek at the 400s, we see a youngster in a darkened library. He is holding a torch aloft as he "explores" an Egyptian tomb. In the back of the book is a section on how to use the Dewey decimal system and a basic one on its actual numerical sequence.

A must have for every library

Most children probably think the Dewey decimal system is boring. This book takes children through their library and explains everything in colorful detail. It talks about how the system got started and then goes through each set of numbers and explains, in easy to understand language, what types of books you can find. The illustrations are fun and add well to each explanation. As each section is talked about the illustrations fill the page with visuals. The rhyming verses help commit the topics to memory and make the book more entertaining to read. At the end of the book is a page that describes the system in more detail and gives instructions on how to find a particular book at the library. The author took something that could potentially be very boring to children and made it fun while still being educational. This is a must have for any school library and would be a good addition to any home with book lovers as well.
This book is for ages 7 to 10.

They Made It Interesting!

I'm as surprised as anyone that there can be a book about the Dewey Decimal System that is light and funny, but this book does the trick. It is informative. It doesn't default to the simple rhymes of a young child's book, but winds up with a great array of interesting word choices. I've enjoyed and reviewed many of Cleary's books in the past, and have enjoyed all, but this is from a different series than the ones that explain parts of speech and math.

Excellent book for Arduino adventurers

I have read many Arduino project books. The Adventures in Arduino is very well organized with various fun projects for the young Arduino adventurers.

The book is very well organized with colorful illustrations for building the circuits and detailed code for each project. The code can also be downloaded from a link provided in the the book. The book also mentioned that there are video instructions on the website. However, at the time of this review, I cannot locate the videos on the website yet.

Here are the general descriptions of the projects in this book :

- Adventure 1 : Setting up your Arduino
Provides an excellent introduction to Arduino with its components and software installation

- Adventure 2 : Reading from Sensors
Introduction to simple Arduino programming using LED and a potentiometer

- Adventure 3 : Working with Servos
Working with servo motors and building a combination safe

- Adventure 4 : Using Shift registers
Working with a shift register IC and building your name in lights. Introduction to programming in loops using functions

- Adventure 5 : Playing Sounds
Working with a buzzer and programming a wind chime using arrays and loops

Really For Adults - or People that love to read and self-learn.

This has to be one of the best-written technical books I've read in a very long time. The writing is perfection - crystal clear and precise. And there is the problem; in theory this book is designed for 11-15 year olds. There aren't a lot of people that age that would spend all that time reading this book. Honestly, they are looking for more pictures with descriptions and gettin' 'er done, than elegant prose.

A person that can take the time and effort to read this book will be richly rewarded with an amazing understanding of Arduino. I think the book is sold way short by trying to be for 11-15 year olds. Honestly, this book is just the most perfect detailed guide on how to get started with Arduino. In that mission this book is a massive success. On the catering to kids, it is a miserable failure.

There is one strange quirk about the book - it is a British book and refers to stores in England. It also uses some British terms that are more or less evident.

I knew absolutely nothing about Arduino when I opened this book. I purchased a starter kit at Christmas and it sat in the box for six months. This book gave me the courage to open that box and start using the awesome kit I bought. Yeah, this book should be included in the starter kit, it is just that good.

My 22 year old son that teaches high school physics looked at the book. He knows the target audience age really well - his first comment, yeah - no way would a high school or junior high student open this book and use it. There is way too much text. As a companion piece and teaching, this works great. As a standalone, to many words, not enough simple doing.

This book is absolutely incredible after you buy into reading. I did a lot of programming a long time ago - so I understand programming computers. I was also a math minor for a while - so logic and flow charts are part of my brain. And I love to teach myself by reading books and trying things - actually dislike being shown how to do something. I'm the perfect person for this book. And I'm around 4 times the target age.

I couldn't believe how perfect the adventures were (that's fun talk for projects or chapters). Each section built on the previous chapter. Each chapter was easy to be successful. And some critical things were taught each time. I learned how to set up, and program an Arduino. The projects end up being pretty complex. Frankly, if you can get through these 9 projects - you're totally ready for all the Arduino projects in Instructables (a community sourced DIY website that has a lot of Arduino projects among a lot of other cool things).

You honestly don't need any particular technical skills to learn from this book. Just a desire to play around with an Arduino to get an idea of what they can do. It is a fantastic starting point.

Another great "Adventures" book

This is a pretty solid intro to the Arduino and is suitable for beginners of all ages. The first chapters cover the usual stuff: what is Arduino; how to install the Arduino software; various Arduino components and what they do. What I especially liked was the clear explanation of what a breadboard is and how the rows/columns are connected (or not). Furthermore, the color photos of Arduino-to-breadboard arrangements have green lines on them so that you can readily see what jumper wires and components are connected (or not). This is quite important, considering that the books I've had so far--along with SparkFun circuit projects--aren't always detailed enough (i.e. you can't necessarily see all the connections clearly).

One of the early projects is building a message status sign, where you turn a knob to change which message (on a box you make) has an LED on next to it. While the project is fine, it requires some soldering, which may be an optimistic expectation for someone just starting out with the Arduino. After this, the book continues on with digital input and a variety of challenging but educational projects. What's required for each project is clearly listed and shown. In addition, the book points readers to the "fritzing" website, which offers more projects, tutorials and such.

All in all, a great book for learning Arduino, electronics and some programming. I also recommended two other books in this series, namely "Adventures in Python" and "Adventures in Raspberry Pi."

Great addition to the Office bookshelf with something for everyone

I enjoyed this book's relaxed style and the brisk but effective coverage of key Excel areas. Topics range from entering formulas through to an excellent section on the complex topic of macros. There are plenty of practical examples which can be applied to real-world problems, together with frank discussions of the pitfalls you may come across.

There are also comprehensive lists of functions and shortcut keys, and tips which the author has gathered over a lifetime of working with Excel.

Make sure you register the book (steps are on a page almost at the back of the book, after the index) to get access to all the accompanying data files - particularly useful for the Pivot Table and Power Map sections.

FANTASTIC EXCEL 2016 REFERENCE!!!!

Are you a hard-core Excel 2016 user? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Bill Jelen, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows Excel 2016’s full power and updated interface.

Author Jelen, begins by explaining the new features in Excel 2016 and a few important features that you might have missed if you upgraded directly from Excel 2010 to Excel 2016. Then, the author shows you how to use the Excel user interface. He continues by walking you through examples of customizing the ribbon and discusses some of the important option settings available to Excel. Then, the author points out which of the old Excel 2003 keyboard shortcuts still work, shows you some new shortcuts, and introduces you to the keyboard accelerators. He then shows you how to understand and calculate formulas. Next, the author explains the finer points of formula operators, date math, and how Excel distinguishes between cutting and copying cells referenced in formulas. He continues by introducing you to Excel 2016’s five new forecast functions, which are being used by the new Forecast Sheet command. Then, the author describes the functions that you can access with the Formulas tab by using the Text icon, the Date & Time icon, and the Math portion of the Math & Trig icon. He then covers four groups of workhouse functions. Next, the author provides a reference to functions from the Web, Financial, Statistical, Trigonometry, Matrix, and Engineering functions. He continues by showing you how to do the following: Connect two worksheets; connect two workbooks; and, manage links between workbooks. Then, the author shows you how to use the Name Manager interface to assign and use names effectively. He then introduces you to the tools available in Power Query; as well as, traditional tools such as Sort, Filter, Remove Duplicates, and Flash Fill. Next, the author shows you how to summarize data by using subtotals or filter. He continues by showing you how use pivot tables to slice and dice your data in almost any imaginable way. Then, the author shows you how to perform ad-hoc analysis by choosing various items from various fields in the pivot table. He then shows you how anyone with Excel 2016 can build pivot tables from multiple tables. Next, the author discusses some of the Excel 2016’s features that are helpful when you are trying to find a specific answer. He continues by showing you how to edit recorded macro code, so that you can then record a macro that is close to what you want and edit that macro to create something that runs the way you want it to work. Then, the author looks at miscellaneous tips and tricks for Excel 2016. He then looks at how to format documents in Excel 2016 with the following three methods: Use tables styles; use cell styles; and, use formatted commands. Next, the author shows you a few tricks on how to set up basic conditional formatting. He continues by covering some general techniques for creating graphs. Then, the author discusses how to use 3D Map within Excel 2016. Finally, he shows you how to use sparklines.

In addition, the author has also done a fantastic job with this excellent book, by showing you some tips on how to create a workbook model and print it in Excel 2016. Also, within this great book, you have learned many useful things that you can do with Excel online, by viewing and editing your workbooks in a browser.

I received an AVR of “Say Goodbye to Crazy” partly due to my personal experience with “crazy”. After reading in full, I can say with confidence, the only thing I would change about this book is the publication date. What a difference this book could have made for my husband and I 15 years ago. Instead we navigated the crazy waters with the, well intended, but ultimately impotent guidance of friends and family who had no idea what we were up against. While even the most amicable divorces are emotionally charged and have some degree of animosity… If you find that your situation has become toxic and abusive, read this book and when you finish read it again, and every time you have a lull in the torment and think well maybe things will be better now, read it again. Thank you Dr. Palmatier for your no holds barred contribution to a subject few are willing to take on....women can be the abuser.

So I made a mistake of shacking up with Crazy. Yes it happens to some awesome guys. After icing down some bruises and saying some affirmations in the mirror. I pulled the trigger and bought this book.

A few things you should know:
1.This book is written primarily for the new partner of a guy out of an abusive relationship. Ignore those references, and still read this even if you haven't left crazy.. I moved out and this gave me a definitive direction to go.

2.This isn't a magic fix or a total win. But when you've hit bottom there's nowhere to go but up and forward. The concepts are a bit brutal. And you really have to redefine what a win is.

3. Supplement this book with a professional counselor or some sort of support system. The book goes over questions to ask your prospective therapist. Or talk to someone you trust.

I would recommend this book and share it with family members and friends. It's a very valuable tool.

Life changing for those caught up in the drama

Unless you have had this type of crazy person described in this book in your life you can't really appreciate the magnitude of their abuse. This book gives real clear practical advice dealing with these people. Let's you know what you're up against with these type of people, the bias of the courts, and the bias of the psychology profession and gives a blueprint of how best to make your way through to the other side to sanity. I wish I had this book years ago. People who follow the advice of this book will save themselves years of anguish.

A fantasy of history and the imagination

Do you remember climbing trees, as a child? When I was a child, our neighborhood was full of giant elms that grew into a massive arch that turned our street into a leafy tunnel. I'd climb up on the lower branches, and dream about being brave enough to climb to the very top of the tree.I imagined building tree houses, where my friends I I could camp out high in the trees, our own special places where grownups were not allowed.

Italo Calvino imagines Cosimo, a boy from a family of minor nobles of the late 18th Century who one day takes to the trees in an act of rebellion against his family, vowing never to set foot on the Earth again. He keeps his promise, traveling to foreign lands, falling in love, corresponding with Voltaire and Diderot and other great minds of his day, participating in the intellectual and the revolutionary movements. Cosimo's younger brother narrates the story of how the young baron took to the trees, and what became of him.

Italo Calvino uses his gifts in storytelling and description to create a world in which a preposterous notion becomes commonplace. The most preposterous characters and events can seem ordinary as Calvino describes them. Cosimo's mother, a German woman known as "the Generalessa," spend her time doing embroidery, but not of the sort you'd expect. "The lace and embroidery were usually in the designs of geographical maps; our mother would stretch them over cushions or tapestry and stick in pins and tiny flags, showing the disposition of battles in the Wars of Succession, which she knew by heart..."

There is also Battista, the sister of Cosimo and our narrator, "a kind of stay at home nun," confined to the castle after a questionable encounter with a young noble, who dresses in a nun's wimple and takes her revenge on the family by preparing exquisite yet inedible dishes. Cosimo's uncle (the illegitimate brother of the Duke) dresses in Turkish robes and a fez and busies himself looking after the legal affair of the family and making complex plans for canals and hydraulic systems that will never be built. Next door is a family with whom Cosimo's family has been feuding, and they have a young daughter- but beyond that you'll have to read the book for yourself.

This is Calvino at his best, the teller of fabulous tales and a crafter of exquisite sentences who can catapult the reader far up into the trees, and beyond.

This book immediately became my favorite novel that took me into the world of uninhibited dreams and actualizing an idea that is so coveted as a child, I would have loved to escape all the responsibilities of the world that was inevitable as I grew up and just live in the trees and travel the world this way. this book just transforms your mind into a brave little boy learning to cope with the reality that is his conflicted political inevitable demise.

A parable disquised as an intellecual exercise, or is it?

Never underestimate Italo Calvino, for what you think you are reading may turn out to be something else entirely from your original impressions. That is the case with the relatively short novel, The Baron in the Trees. It is true that I found it enchanting in the beginning and several chapters captured that enchantment, but there are sections that seem totally irrelevant to the plot and by the time I finished the book, I realized it really had no plot. It is an intellectual exercise disguised as a parable. Or is it a long parable disguised as an intellectual exercise? It offers an alternative reality based on our historic reality. Calvino takes an illogical premise that a young man decides at age 12 to life the rest of his life in the trees, and then constructs a world of detail around that premise, thus keeping the reader in a state of suspension. The narrator is the younger brother to the Baron who observes and relates to us what he sees, what he interprets, and sometimes the inner motivations of the other characters. It is the love affair between Cosimo, the Baron in the trees, and Viola, his childhood girlfriend and adult lover that is the peak or climax of the story for all energy and action leads to this point and the recedes from their affair. Despite the young narrator observations and interpretations, the Baron remained a mystery for me and I finally came to the conclusion that he is the ultimate outsider, the one who sees all human society and social constructions from a philosophical distance. Yet, it is passion an love for Viola that causes Cosimo to lose the perspective of the outsider and to be bound in his passions and desires. The character of Viola is fascinating for as a child she pits boy against boy and as a woman she pits man against man. Yet Calvino has a fascinating interpretation of why she uses jealous against the man she loves most in her life. About every five pages Calvino offers a charming and sometimes enchanting comment or observation or description that reveals him to be the master of irony and abstraction. If you are ready for an author to play games with your expectations, read it.

Easy Read, Practical, and Up-to-date

I bought this for a colleague whose teacher training never included anything specific to teaching a second language. I ordered and read a lot of similar types of books before settling on this one. I was worried about giving her something long that she wouldn't bother to read or something so technical she wouldn't get anything out of it, and this was the perfect choice. It's a quick and easy read and hits all the major misconceptions about SLA, along with some basic advice about what it all means in practice. It is totally approachable even if you don't know all the SLA terminology.

This would make a great choice for a staff development book study or for anyone just looking to make sure they are up to date on current research. Probably not the best if you already know quite a lot about SLA.

The Oxford Handbooks "How Languages Are Learned" is a better option if you are looking for something more in-depth.

Excellent overview of SLA research (found exactly what I was looking for in an easy read)

The organization of this books is excellent. Each chapter starts out with a "In the real word" then progresses to "What the research says" and ends with a "What we can do". The information presented is accessible to those new to SLA field. It's 100% sufficient in what the book sets out to accomplish - no more, no less - which makes it an "easy" academic read. If there is a topic you'd like to explore further their are plenty of references within to satisfy your palate for SLA research.

If you have some experience in the field already, you may find that you already know "this or that"; however, I still find the information beneficial as it reaffirms that my own observations in the field are supported by research. The author is also very good at letting the reader know what research is still inconclusive.

Overall, it's an excellent overview of SLA research that also provides actionable steps based on the existing data toward better L2 acquisition.

Easy to read and informative

I had to read a book of my choosing for an acquisition graduate class and I am glad I chose this book. The book provided lots of research based info. on acquisition without having to read 300 studies. The most beneficial part of the book was how it applied to classroom teaching.
