He went to the childhood homes of both Gandhi and his wife Kastur in Porbandar and visited the former British Residency in Rajkot from which Gandhi was unceremoniously ejected by one of the Raj s servants. The author stood in the modest court room in Ahmedabad where Gandhi was found guilty of sedition by that same Raj and ventured into the prisons to which Gandhi was so often consigned. Turner walked along the beach at Juhu where the Mahatma went to recuperate, and talked with Rajmohan at Birla House in New Delhi where his grandfather was assassinated. The result is both a fascinating journey and a candid and immensely readable portrait of the man who, with all his well-documented foibles and weaknesses, not only led his country to freedom but also lit up the world with his life and ideas.

Graham Turner has been for many years a nationally known, award-winning journalist in Britain. He was the BBC s first economics correspondent and worked for the Sunday Times, the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, the Observer and the Daily Mail. His other books include a biography of Queen Elizabeth, based on intimate conversations with many of her family and friends. He has one wife, three children and one cat.

Though I have read numerous biographies of Gandhi, this one was my favorite. The book did an outstanding job of avoiding hagiography and really let the reader know the human sacrifices Gandhi made to achieve his objectives. And if there was one human quality that was echoed over and over it was Gandhi's perseverance. The book was also very easy to read and extremely interesting in revealing many new facts which I previously did not know.

P. C. Gope (Ph.D., National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur) is Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the College of Technology, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. With over two decades of teaching experience, he has published/presented 63 research papers in reputed national and international journals/conferences. How Many Physicians Would Pass The Exam?

Pauline Chen is a surgeon who does liver transplants. She is also a fine writer as FINAL EXAM - A SURGEON'S REFLECTIONS ON MORTALITY proves so well. She writes with both passion and humility about the contradiction she sees in the field of medicine: that doctors, who witness death so often that it should almost become routine essentially are no better at dealing with the end of life than their patients are. (She actually uses the word "dysfunctional" to describe many physicians' attitudes toward death.) She believes there are many reasons for this phenomenon. Doctors are trained to be healers; that is why most of them went to medical school. To lose a patient to death somehow is an admission of failure. Many physicians will continue aggressive but useless therapy for a dying patient to pacify the patient's family. Sometimes they fear litigation or they may continue treatment-- we can only hope occasionally-- for financial gain. But whatever the reasons, they are not good enough. The patient loses, but the physician loses as well the chance to do-- what Chen would call-- "something more than cure" and "nurture our [physicians'] best humanistic tendencies."

Dr. Chen discusses candidly her first experience with death, when she was a sophomore in college, of her maternal grandfaather. Then in medical school she spent 12 weeks with a cadaver: "My very first patient had beeen dead for over a year before I laid hands on her." She writes about her first patient to die and her inability to contact a dying friend. She confronts her fears about her own mortality when she is about to harvest organs (a procedure she had done eighty-two times previously) from an automobile accident victim and discovers that the donor is a brain-dead thirty-five-year old Asian American woman: "For a moment I saw a reflection of my own life and I felt as if I were pulling apart my own flesh."

This beautifully written book reminded me of another fine book by another physician, Abraham Verghese's MY OWN COUNTRY, an account of his treating the first patients-- most of whom would certainly die horrible deaths-- with HIV/AIDS at the local VA hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee in the 1980's. Both these books should be required reading for medical students.

When I finished Dr. Chen's "reflections," I thought of (1) how fortunate her patients are to have a surgeon so sensitive and so human and (2) wondered how many physicians would take time out from their busy schedules to read her wise words.

Beautifully written, humbly offered

Starting with her earliest medical training in anatomy with dissection of cadavers, Pauline Chen takes us on a journey into the sacred territory of the human body, and challenges the medical profession's failure to train physicians in the care of the dying. This book should be required for anyone training for the medical profession. As we follow her personal journey to becoming a surgeon specializing in liver transplants, she respectfully acknowledges the "so much that is right" about medical training, but reveals the dilemma of medicine's lack of preparation for the inevitability of death. I highly recommend this book! Dr. Chen's authentic writing, part memior and part thesis, explains the training medical students undergo. She discusses how this training, the culture of medicine and other factors have failed to prepare doctors to communicate with patients and family members about death and dying.

Dr. Chen's book reminded me of the doctor who told a friend to 'put your affairs in order' when she woke up after surgery. That surgeon's total failure to convey news that an expected benign tumor was advanced stage cancer emotionally gutted his groggy patient. Final Exam sheds light on how this highly recommended surgeon could so spectacularly fail to communicate with compassion.

This book is well written and an easy read for the layman. As I finished this book, I recalled the debates about what 'the doctor said' whenever my family had dealt with a terminal diagnosis. I had chalked it up to a mix of stress and different communication styles yet Dr. Chen reminds us that the doctor's ability to communicate is essential.

A great CAPM prep book

I bought this book to get ready to renew my CAPM under the PMBOK 5th Ed. This book was so much easier to use that the prep book I used five years ago, I wish I'd had it then. I really liked how this book led me through the PMBOK, and had exam questions for each subsection of the PMBOK, not just one big test at the end of each chapter. I went through the book twice and when I was doing 80% or better on tests, I took the PMI exam. All of Aileen's advice, like how to reason through the tough questions, came into play as no two PMI exam tests are alike. I passed on my first attempt, and only needed two hours to do the three hour test. I highly recommend this book. And BTW I viewed the Kindle edition on the Cloud Reader and had no trouble with any of the text or tables.

Simply the best

This book is truly well written accompanied with fantastic photos from the sistine chapel.
I found it easy to follow and I only wish I purchased the book before I went to Italy last year.
The details were exquisite and I highly recommend this book to anyone who intends to visit the
sistine chapel or those who are interested in great artist like Michaelangelo.

Enlightening

Very easy and interesting read. I visited the Sistine Chapel a few years back but was unable to learn much as to the meaning of each of the paintings on the ceiling. The tour guide was knowledgeable enough for a quick tour but I wanted to know more. This book delivers.

The author shares what Michelangelo told friends and biographers as to the meanings of the various paintings.The author also shares with his readers how the ceiling was viewed at the time of its unveiling by the artists contemporaries.

This is not a dry, boring read, and I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Rome who plans on visiting the Sistine Chapel, or who just wants to know more about the artist and his greatest work outside of his sculpting.

Michelangelo is Magnificent - and so is this book!

There have been many, many books written about this subject - as well there should be! Some have been very good, many quite boringly bad, others just off-the-wall in their alleged revelations of obscure, arcane Da Vinci-type "codes" hidden in the paintings. So I bought the hardcover edition of this book with some trepidation, wondering what else was there to be said about the most famous ceiling in world. Having just finished reading this book, I can simply say that it truly isn't WHAT you do, it is HOW you do it. And Andrew Graham-Dixon has DONE it, admirably, wonderfully. His book is clear, concise, perfectly ilustrated - and it is also, by my lights, the best and most poetic description of Michelangelo's glorious ceiling ever written. I'll go even further: what the Maestro put on the ceiling in paints, this author puts into this book in words! One example may suffice: in discussing the fresco entitled The Deluge (depicting Noah and the survivors of the Great Flood) Mr. Graham-Dixon poetically points out the unique composition wherein half the fresco is crowded with human misery and the other half is virtually blank with calm but deadly and steadily rising waters. He concludes his insightful description and commentary on this compositional disparity with a summation of Michelangelo's apparent artistic intent - and that is to show that "The world is a picture that God can unpaint at any moment." What a line! An aphorism in and of itself. These types of rich and extremely well-worded interpretations fill the deceptively slim volume. Reading this book, one feels as if they were seeing the ceiling paintings for the first time.

The book also details Michelangelo's entire life in, again, the same pointed, poetic manner. Mr. Graham-Dixon even does a Joe Friday in sticking to "just the facts" when discussing Michelangelo's much debated sexuality. In two short pages, the author succinctly argues the case against the popular belief that the artist was homosexual. It would not have mattered if he were - but it is this type of clear-headed research and writing that makes this book so profound and so thrilling to read.

I was sorry when the book ended. It's that good!

Coloroso says that there are three types of parents--Jellyfish, Brickwall, and Backbone. The first two muck it up royally by being too wishy-washy or too firm. The parent with a backbone, however, can be stern when necessary and provide structure yet have the flexibility that children and families need. Coloroso applies these models to a variety of parenting situations, from toilet training to curfew setting. Like the Cosby show, it looks and sounds so easy when the script is already written, but there are plenty of good ideas here for keeping parents' sanity intact. Love this book

Love this book. Wasn't sure at first. She doesn't believe in disciplining by spanking or grounding. Instead she believes in teaching children self-disciple, by owning up to their mistake, finding a solution to correcting it, & fixing it themselves. Depending on their age, you may need to help them.
What I liked at the beginning was- She did not believe in the gold stickers. I personally never understood giving a kid a Gold Star for behaving. I have not finished reading it yet, but have already started using her ideas on my grandkids I babysit. Seen a big difference in getting them to do their chores right off the bat. Told my 13yr.old to clean her room. She informed me she would do it at her own speed, not mine. I told her I had no intention of even checking her room. She cleaned it better than normal. (I had to walk past it so I peaked in).

Kids are Worth it!!!

When you are at your wits end and don't know what to do, this is the book for you. I raised my kids on it and all 3 are very nice, responsible, loving kids that we are so proud of. Other parents had terrible problems with their kids. We were not problem free but we handled the problems with the advice from this book. Its not just for your kids. Its for everyone that comes into your life. When you know how to treat people, when they realize you have standards and confidence in your way of handling a situation, you are a winner. I cannot recommend this book enough. I buy it for new moms and I'm sure they put it on the shelf and don't open it but OPEN IT UP PEOPLE. Its worth the read or buy the tape.

As a special education teacher, I thought this book would benefit me in my work. which it has. It was recommended by a presenter at a workshop.

I found the book to be very well written and covered the full range of topics regarding infants through adolescents.

What I didn't expect was that this information goes beyond the classroom - it goes into the home!! Excellent information for parents and caregivers. I also believe that it can help people reflect on their own up-bringing and self awareness.
