brilliant!

Die Traumnovelle is a psychological novel (in fact Schnitzel and Freud were often in touch) who deals with the need for transgression. The two main characters, married, get bored with their everyday life and routine and so they start longing for what I'd call "adventure". But eventually, they understand that adventure isn't what we really want, it's just a temptation and once we satisfy it, it seems much less exciting than we thought. In fact what the two characters really want is exactly their everyday life and eventually they get back to it... I'm sorry, I could have explained this a lot better in Italian ;-)

Elegantly strange and tinged with regret

Rhapsody is a quick read and one that creates an aura of delightful anticipation at a rapidly accelerating rate. I found a copy at a local University library-a tiny volume printed in 1927 by Alfred Knopf. I am a diehard Kubrick fan and was thrilled as I turned each page and recognized many scenes seen in the Eyes Wide Shut promo. Leelee Sobrieski's film character in the carnival shop must be the somewhat deranged adolescent kept by the sinister costumer. (This character is never thoroughly explained- indeed this level of teasing ambiguity is what makes Schnitzler's narrative so compelling.) After all the hullabaloo concerning the "supposed" cross-dressing and drug-use in the film, I was pleased to find that Rhapsody is all dark undercurrent and dancing shadows. There are real moments of danger and sexual angst to be sure, but it's so subtle it hurts. The original title Dream Novel is apt- the protagonist's adventures happen within the space of night and the following day. As he journeys through the town in the afternoon glare he begins to doubt that any of the peculiar and frightening things he's been a part of could actually have happened. He strives to understand his relationship to these experiences in a rational way- to no avail. Get the book! It's scintillating and sharp leaving lots to the imagination and plenty of leeway to interpret the characters motives.

A pure RHAPSODY

Like everyone else, I imagine I felt driven to acquire and read this book in the name of the forthcoming Stanley Kubrick movie. To hear such a genius refer so highly to a single work instills a deep desire to see for yourself. After finally landing a copy (without tossing too much from the old wallet), I completed the book in a near single sitting. Schnitzler's Rhapsody mesmerizes. He deftly tapped into the hidden desires and uncontrollable urges, thoughts and desires of us all. To want what we do not have; and when (or if) we seek that which is at most times forbidden - we find ourselves in an often worse position - showing us the damaging course our libidos and dark halves will send us upon. I found myself often times reading with a nervous, yet libidinously charged smile - feeling both the exhillaration and the utmost despair and hatred. The story of Fridolin is the experience which we all are capable of. It is indeed Rhapsody. A mere 5 stars is not enough for this tryst.

About the Author
James H. Overfield received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is Professor and Chair of History at the University of Vermont. In 1999 he received the University's outstanding teaching award. His publications include HUMANISM AND SCHOLASTICISM IN LATE MEDIEVAL GERMANY (Princeton University Press, 1984), as well as numerous articles published in such journals as Societas and Studies in Medieval and Renaissance History. He is also the author of SOURCES OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY GLOBAL HISTORY, published by Houghton Mifflin (2002).

so I'd say that it's definitely a good value. If you need this textbook

The covers of this textbook are a little beat up, but it's not too much of a problem for me, especially considering the fact that it's used. This book is still very usable and came at a relatively low price, so I'd say that it's definitely a good value. If you need this textbook, this is the place to buy it.

Arrived on time however the textbook that I received was very used. The previous owner basically colored every page with highlighter. I would order a less used book less time and maybe pay a little more because it is very distracting to read because it is so colored and drawn on.

The book itself isn't bad but you didn't mention that the original owner was an artist.
Has highlighted sides of the book which makes it look a lot older than it should be.

About the Author
James Garvey�has a PhD in philosophy from University College London. He works for the Royal Institute of Philosophy and is editor of The Philosophers' Magazine.�
He is the author of The Great Philosophers and The Story of Philosophy (both with JeremyStangroom), The Twenty Greatest Philosophy Books, and The Ethics of Climate Change. He edited The Continuum Companion to the Philosophy of Mind and is co-editor of the Think Now series of books on social and political philosophy. His books have been translated into nine languages. Born in the shadow of beautiful Table Mountain, Aneza Lee's passion for writing led her to become not only a published fantasy author, but an editor too. As a child she believed each glittering dewdrop was a fairy diamond, and the stars were divine guardians who guided her along her path. She has a great love of the written word and believes there is much to learn, and to teach, through this medium about human nature and the world we share. There is a magic in the air of the wild land called Africa where she was born and she tries to suffuse her writing with it. She lives in a leafy suburb of Brackenfell in the beautiful Cape of Good Hope and she recently published the long awaited second novel in the Harpy Chronicles, The Namari Book II. Her poem, Dancing with Gypsies, was published in the Forever Spoken Collection by the International Library of Poetry and won the Editor's Choice award. Imaginative, romantic fantasy from a promising new author

The Namari, book one of the Harpy Chronicles, is the debut book of writer Aneza Lee and it definitely speaks of good things to come! It is always good to find a new fantasy writer with an original world, flowing story and a beatifully descriptive way of writing.

The Namari dives from page one into the plot of two warring goddesses and Kirin, the elfin princess that is thrust into the centre of the conflict. The pace is fast yet steady, the writing is smooth and easy, the plot is interesting and quite novel, and the characters are by turns endearing, sympathetic, irritating and mysterious - just as they should be!

Of course all the elves are beautiful, the dark elves show delicious hints of evil and frankly, I have no idea which goddess to route for yet! Our heroine Kirin, is young yet maturing rapidly, easy going but with hidden depths and vast powers only hinted at so far. And of course romance is not far off!

A delicious book to curl up with and easily race through. We are waiting for the sequel in anticipation!

The story and characters were great! In my opinion, there were to many descriptive paragraphs going on within the book and not enough dialogues. Also, the pace was too slow for me.

But this book is definitely worth a shot!

ONE OF THE BETTER BOOKS I HAVE READ

As the title of my review suggests, this is the best book I have read in long time. The author's world building skills are excellent. I liked her descriptions of places and people. They were detailed but they did not go on forever. I also loved all the stories about the different gods and goddess. Those little stories and flash backs about Kirin's past balanced out all the travel parts that could have been boring in a lesser author's hands. Everything in the book really worked and I was not at all predictable. The dialog was excellent and the characters interacted together well.

The only thing that really bugged med was that this is not a complete book. It ends in the middle of the story like the author just stopped writing and decided to publish the book in the middle of the story. It okay to have a story takes place across length of a series of books, but at least give it a beginning, middle and end. Also the romance in the main two characters relationship felt odd to me. However, in the author's defense the vision thing could have been the reason, but it still felt that the relationship just progressed all of a sudden. All the other relationships in the book seemed real and so well thought out that I made the two main character relationship seem weird. At least it gives us readers something to discuss. My recommendation is to buy the book now and then wait to the second book to come out to read it. As for me I will be not so patiently waiting for the second book. I just hope it is a good as the first.
